Breakers Clash with Undefeated Athletica this Sunday

Boston Breakers News Release
The Breakers and St. Louis Athletica, currently tied atop the WPS standings with identical 1-0-1 records, meet for the first time in 2010 this Sunday evening at 6:00 PM (EST) at Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park in Fenton, MO. A victory for either side will place that team in sole possession of first place after three weekends of WPS play. The match pits two of the best strikers in the world against one another - the Breakers's Kelly Smith and Athletica's Eniola Aluko - who happen to be teammates on the English National Team. Both Smith and Aluko have tallied goals in each of the first two weekends of the season and are currently tied for the league goal scoring lead along with Christine Sinclair of FC Gold Pride.
The Breakers have a 1-2-0 record all time against St. Louis. The Breakers defeated Athletica 2-0 on April 11, 2009 at Harvard Stadium, thanks to goals by Kristine Lilly and Smith. Athletica got the better of it in two subsequent matches during the 2009 season, recording 1-0 victories at Harvard Stadium in June and at A-B Soccer Park in August. In both 2009 defeats, Athletica's game-winning goals came off the foot of Aluko.
Sunday's match will be televised live on Fox Soccer Channel at 6:00 PM EST. Fans can also follow the action on WPS Match Tracker, Live Webcast, and iPhone stream.
Smith Scores in Home Opener, Leads Team in Scoring
Kelly Smith scored her second consecutive goal in the 2010 season in last Sunday's home opener at Harvard Stadium as the Breakers tied 1-1 with the Philadelphia Independence.
The Breakers lone goal game in the 49th minute off of a free kick when Liz Bogus was fouled from twenty yards out. Smith's kick deflected off Philadelphia's defensive wall and past goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc putting the Breakers up 1-0.
Philadelphia answered back only five minutes later with a goal from Allison Faulk off a Lori Lindsey direct kick for the equalizer in the 55th minute.
Smith's success so far in 2010 is looking identical to her breakout start in 2009. Last season, Smith scored a goal in each of the first three games. Similarly this season, Smith scored in both the season opener on April 10th against the Washington Freedom, and also in Sunday's home opener.
