Brazos Valley Bombers News Release
Victoria, Texas - The Bombers (5-3) traveled to Victoria, Texas to face off against the 4-5 Generals. The Bombers entered the game leading the TCL in runs scored (61) and the Generals leading the league in home runs (5). The Bombers take a 7-3 victory on the road thanks to lights-out pitching through the first seven innings and a great hitting performance from 3rd baseman Riley Bender.
Bender, who finished 3-5 on the night with 3 RBIs, got the game started for the Bombers with a solo home run in the 2nd inning, his first HR of the season. He showed off his speed in the 5th inning, beating a throw from 3rd base for a single. Bender capped off the night in the 8th with the bases loaded with a two-run RBI single to shallow left field.
The Bombers saw great performances from both of their first two pitchers, starter Hunter Mayo (1.17 ERA) for four innings and then Cinoon Bak (3.00 ERA) for another three, to get the visiting team comfortably through the first 7 innings. Mayo allowed one hit, a single for the Generals' leadoff in the first inning, struck out six Generals batters and gave up one walk in the 13 batters he faced. Bak, who came in to start the 5th inning, had 5 Ks and only allowed three hits, one walk, and a run.
With the bases loaded in the 3rd inning, designated hitter Kade Fletcher hit into an infield fielder's choice and scored Davis Powell from 3rd base to give the Bombers a 2-0 lead.
After the Generals were able to get on the board in the 5th inning, scoring one run, the Bombers laid on five in the 8th to give themselves a big lead cushion with six outs left in the game.
An RBI single up the middle from Wyatt Grant scored to 1st Bomber run of the inning. Two batters later Kameron Weil recorded his first hit of the night, an RBI double into the outfield gap to score Grant from 2nd. Bender scored another two in the 8th, Weil from 3rd and Powell from 2nd base. Mike Adair scored from 3rd off a failed attempt by the Generals to turn a double play to get out of the inning to give the bombers a 7-1 lead after eight innings.
The Generals put up a valiant effort in the bottom of the ninth to try to come back from their six-run deficit. Two of the four General hits on the night came in the last inning. The home team managed to put up two runs in the 9th, an RBI single and an RBI double, to close the gap but Bombers closer Trent Thompkins was able to record two pivotal outs to get the team out of what could have been a scary situation and secure the victory.
Although the final score was 7-3, the Bombers had numerous chances throughout the game to extend their lead even further but left runners stranded. The Brazos Valley managed to load the bases four times tonight, first in the 2nd, again in the 3rd, and twice in the 8th inning. The Bombers scored four runs off of those bases-loaded situations but in total left 12 runners stranded on bases throughout the game.
The now 6-3 Bombers sit atop the TCL table, tied with the Acadiana Cane Cutters for 1st place. The team will travel to Smokey Joe Stadium in Seguin, Texas to play the last place (3-7) River Monsters tomorrow night, June 13th. The Bombers are back at Edible Field the following night, Tuesday the 14th, for "Youth Sports Night"! We hope to see you at the ballpark!
