Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL â Neal Cotts made his first start since rejoining the Barons but took the loss as the Greenville Braves shutout the Barons 5-0 on Monday afternoon in front of 2,825 fans at the Hoover Met.
Cotts (9-7) made his last start when he went up against the New York Yankees in New York last Thursday and was roughed up for five runs in just 1/3 of an inning. On Monday, he didn't fair much better as he lasted just two innings and gave up five runs. Only one of the runs was an earned run as an error by shortstop Guillermo Reyes led to the big inning. To his credit, Cotts was not expected to go deep into the game as the Barons coaching staff used the game to set up the rotation and bullpen for the playoffs. After Cotts left the game, six relievers worked the final seven innings and only allowed one base runner on a walk by Byeong An in the sixth.
Greenville's runs in the second inning came on a two-run single by Richard Lewis, a steal of home on a double steal by Bryan Jeffcoat, and a pair of RBI singles by Charles Thomas and Ramon Castro.
Daniel Curtis picked up the win as he tossed five shutout innings and gave up just three hits while striking out one.
The Barons now head into the Western Division Playoffs against the Huntsville Stars with game one of the series starting in Huntsville on Wednesday, September 3. The Barons will send out RHP Enemencio Pacheco (12-2, 2.56) to face RHP Ben Hendrickson (7-6, 3.45). All the action can be heard on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
