Braves Pull off Late Comeback, Sweep Royals in Five
August 16, 2014 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Danville Otterbots News Release
DANVILLE, VA - The Danville Braves had an opportunity to take five straight games, all against the Burlington Royals. The D-Braves started 4-0 in their stretch with rival Burlington, and managed to complete the sweep with an exciting fifth straight win over the Royals 4-2.
With two on and two out in the eighth inning, Matt Tellor stepped to the plate with an opportunity to give Danville the lead late in the game. Last night, Tellor crushed a three run double that put the D-Braves up for good in a 5-2 victory over the Royals. Tonight, Tellor did it again with the Braves trailing 2-1, and facing South Boston, Virginia native Dylan Sons on the mound for Burlington. Tellor roped a first pitch fastball to the wall in left center scoring Omar Obregon and Jordan Edgerton, putting the Braves up for good 3-2.
The two RBI double for Tellor was his lone hit of the evening, as the big first baseman went 1-3 for the game with the two RBI and double.
Daniel Cordero threw a gem for the D-Braves, but unfortunately was not in line for the win upon his exit. Cordero went 6.0 innings, and only gave up one unearned run. Cordero did give up seven hits, and the Royals had a base runner in every inning of the game except the final frame, but the offense could not capitalize. In his six innings, Cordero allowed just one walk and struck out half a dozen Burlington batters.
Omar Obregon continues to be a staple of consistency in the Danville lineup. Obregon went 2-3 on the night, knocking in a run in the third inning on a double to the left field corner for the game's first run. Obregon has been close to an everyday player for the D-Braves, and now has a batting average of .306 on the season.
The Danville Braves (33-22) will be in action tomorrow back at home at the friendly confines of American Legion Post 325 Field at Dan Daniel Memorial Park to begin a big Appalachian League East Division series with the Pulaski Mariners (29-25). The game will be an afternoon contest, with a first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
