August 5, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
Pearl, MS - In the rubber game of a five-game set and the finale of a 10-game homestand, the Montgomery Biscuits got four unearned runs in a 6-3 defeat of the Mississippi Braves Wednesday night. 2,554 fans watched the M-Braves fall to 5-10 in 2009 against the Biscuits.
The Braves came out swinging as they posted a two-spot in the bottom of the first. Concepcion Rodriguez led off by reaching on a fielding error and he scored on a double by Freddie Freeman. Freeman then scored on a triple by Willie Cabrera and Ryne Reynoso went back to the mound with a two-run cushion.
After the Braves plated a pair of unearned runs in the first, Montgomery got three freebies in the third. Brandon Hicks flipped to Travis Jones for a would-be inning-ending double play. Jones couldn't get the handle and the inning was extended. Rashad Eldridge then singled home JT Hall and Fernando Cortez singled home Cortez and Jason Bowers. The three unearned runs put the visitors on top, 3-2.
Montgomery tacked on another run in the fourth on a sac-fly by Mississippi native JT Hall. Jose Lobaton doubled and moved to third on a single by Cody Strait. Hall then sent a fly ball to center that brought Lobaton to the plate with the Biscuits fourth run.
More unearned runs came the Biscuits way in the seventh. Strait and Bowers both singled and both came in to score thanks to errors by Jones. After six-and-a-half, the Biscuits led 6-2.
Travis Jones got an RBI single in the ninth to make the final, 6-3.
Reynoso gave up six runs, only two earned, on seven hits over 6.1 innings. It was his eighth straight quality start, but he fell to 6-7 on the season. Jerome Gamble came on in the seventh and tossed 1.2 shutout innings. Jeff Lyman threw a shutout ninth.
Oliveros gave up two unearned runs over six innings to earn his fourth W of the year. Eddie Morlan threw two shutout innings and Neal Frontz gave up a run in the ninth to finish out the game.
The Braves have the day off tomorrow before hitting the road for the final 10-game road trip of the 2009 season. The Braves have five games in Huntsville before heading to Montgomery for the final five games of the year against the Biscuits.
