
Diamond Jaxx sweep double-header from Lookouts

CHATTANOOGA, TENN. (AUGUST 4, 2009) - The Diamond Jaxx (20-19) pick up two games in the standings on the Chattanooga Lookouts (21-18) Tuesday night by sweeping the double-header at AT&T Field. The Diamond Jaxx took game one, 10-5 and won game two, 6-3. The Jaxx offense pounded out 20 hits in the two games and sweep a double-header for only the second time this season. Jaxx outfielder, Ezequiel Carrera ignited the offense by going 5-for-10 in the two games with four RBI and three runs scored. Carrera now is 9-for-19 with six RBI in his first four games since returning from the DL. Brodie Downs (1-0) earned his first Diamond Jaxx victory in two starts in game one and Steve Bray (4-6) won his second straight decision in the second contests.
Game One: Diamond Jaxx 10, Lookouts 5
To open game one, the Diamond Jaxx tallied three runs on a three run homer by Guillermo Quiroz. Ezequiel Carrera opened the game with a base hit and Marshall Hubbard was hit by pitcher, Chris Withrow. The second homer of the season for Quiroz provided the Jaxx with a 3-0 lead.
As we learned on Monday night, no lead is safe. The Lookouts rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first, getting RBI's from Gabby Martinez, Eddy Perez and Andrew Lambo. After the first, the game was tied at three.
Andrew Lambo's RBI double in the bottom of the third gave the Lookouts a 4-3 lead. Gabby Martinez slide around the tag of Jaxx catcher, Guillermo Quiroz.
The Diamond Jaxx broke the game wide open in the top of the fourth inning, scoring six and running Lookouts starter, Chris Withrow from the game. Guillermo Quiroz led the inning off with his second homer of the game. Matt Mangini picked up an RBI fielders choice and then Ezequiel Carrera slapped a three-RBI triple to the gap in left-center. Carrera scored the Jaxx sixth run of the inning as Greg Halman grounded out to short. The Jaxx took a 9-4 lead after four innings.
Each team added another run and the Jaxx beat the Lookouts, 10-5. Brodie Downs (1-0) earned his first Diamond Jaxx victory in 2009, dealing six innings. Downs gave up five runs on nine hits in the outing, struck out five. Chris Withrow (0-1) suffered the loss for Chattanooga, surrendering six runs in his first start in Double-A.
Game Two: Diamond Jaxx 6, Lookouts 3
The Jaxx continue to have big innings in the series, plating four runs in the top of the second. David Espinosa delivered a two-RBI double bringing home Matt Mangini and Callix Crabbe. Mel Stocker followed the double by Espinosa with one of his own, plating Espinosa giving the Jaxx a 3-0 lead. Ezequiel Carrera tallied his sixth RBI of the series, scoring Stocker on a groundout. The four run inning provided the Jaxx with a 4-0 lead.
Chattanooga scored two in the bottom of the second as Adam Godwin plated Russ Mitchell with a single and Vinny Rottino scored on Jaxx catcher, Flemming Baez throwing error. The two run second cut the Jaxx lead to 4-2.
Eddy Perez blasted his second homer of the series in the bottom of the fourth, slimming the D-Jaxx lead to just 4-3. The homer off of Bray was the 10th he has given up this season.
Jaxx starter, Steve Bray (4-6) picked up his second straight victory and dealt six innings in the quality start. Bray scattered seven hits and allowed just two earned runs.
David Espinosa struck again with another RBI double in the top of the seventh inning giving the Jaxx a three run cushion, entering the bottom of the seventh. Ricky Orta (S, 3) entered the game in the bottom of the seventh and closed out the victory, earning his third save of the season.
The Jaxx and Lookouts meet for the rubber game of the series on Wednesday night at 6:15 CDT. LHP Nick Hill (3-3, 2.83) makes the start for the Diamond Jaxx and RHP Alberto Bastardo (3-2, 5.30) gets the ball for the Lookouts.
