Braves fall in slugfest, 11-9

Chattanooga took the lead in the first after Javon Moran was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. Moran stole second and scored when Javier Molina doubled to right-center. The damage could have been much worse, but Gregor Blanco saved at least two runs when he made an over-the-shoulder catch before crashing into the wall in center field to end the top of the first.

The Lookouts put four runs on the board in the third making the score 5-0. Javier Colina walked and scored on a triple by Joey Votto. Votto came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Noochie Varner. Dewayne Wise then doubled and Anderson Machado doubled him home. Miguel Perez singled to bring Machado in and give Chattanooga a 5-0 advantage.

Mississippi struck back in the bottom of the third when Yunel Escobar belted his second homer of the year. With two outs in the inning, Gregor Blanco walked and Luis Hernandez singled to put runners at the corners. Escobar ripped a three-run shot to left-center to get the Braves back in the game and make the score 5-3.

Chattanooga exploded for four more runs in the fourth. Moran was hit by a pitch for the second time to lead off the inning. Joey Votto reached on an error then Aaron Herr singled Moran home. Wise then blasted a three-run homer that landed on top of the Cellular South Cafe to make the score 9-3 Lookouts.

The Braves answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Onil Joseph and Ray Serrano got back-to-back singles followed by a double from Mike Rozema that brought Joseph to the plate. Joshua Arteaga then hit a sacrifice fly to left that brough Serrano in and Gregor Blanco followed with a single that brought Rozema in to make the score 9-6.

Chattanooga got one run back in the fifth when Colina doubled and Votto singled to bring him in and make the score 10-6 Lookouts.

Mississippi got a little closer in the bottom of the fifth when Hernandez singled and Michael Rosamond belted his 10th homer of the year to bring the Braves to within two at 10-8.

The Braves chipped away another run in the sixth when Mike Rozema singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by pitcher Francisely Bueno, and scored on a double by Blanco to make the score 10-9.

Chattanooga added an insurance run in the ninth when Anderson Machado was hit by a pitch. He scored on a double by Miguel Perez to make the score 11-9.

Paul Bush (4.0 IP, 10 H, 9 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, 2 HB) did not have a good outing and left the game trailing 9-6. He fell to 4-5 on the year. Dave Coggin (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER) allowed one run in his first outing back from the disabled list. Francisely Bueno (3.0 IP, 1 H, 3 K) threw three scoreless innings in relief. Dan Smith (0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 HB). Ryan Basner (0.2 IP, 1 BB) came on in relief of Smith and shutdown the Lookouts rally.

Travis Chick (5.0 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 2 HR) didn't pitch well, but left the game with a 10-8 lead. He improved to 4-2 on the year. Calvin Medlock (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER) gave up one run on two hits through one inning. Jon Coutlangus (2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K) kept the Braves off the scoreboard for two innings. David Shafer (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K) threw a scoreless ninth inning to record his 20th save of the year.

Game five between the Braves and the Lookouts is tomorrow night at Trustmark Park at 7:05 pm. The Braves send righty Matt Wright to the hill in search of his sixth win of the season and his fourth consecutive win while the Lookouts counter with righty Josh Hall. The Braves On Deck Circle powered by Nextel starts off the broadcast at 6:05pm (CT) on SuperSport 930.

BRAVES BITES:

Yunel Escobar ripped his second homer of the year ... he extended his hitting streak to four games. Michael Rosamond belted his team-high 10th homer of the year. Luis Hernandez broke out of an 0-8 slump with a 2-5 game with two runs scored. Four Braves had at least two hits ... All eight position players had at least one hit.
