Danville Otterbots News Release
DANVILLE, VA - The Danville Braves have clinched a playoff spot with a big regular season finale victory over the Bristol Pirates by the score of 6-1. Along with a victory from the Bluefield Blue Jays over the Pulaski Mariners, the Danville Braves have sealed a spot in the playoffs and are set up to square off against the Princeton Rays in the first round.
Andrew Waszak threw a great game in what turned out to be the fourth win of the season for the right hander. In the final game of the regular season, Waszak threw 6.0 innings, allowing just one run on seven hits, without walking any batters. Waszak also struck out five, and with the one run performance lowered his ERA to 4.44 on the season.
It was a brigade of singles that did in the Bristol Pirates with the game tied 1-1. Justin Black got things started with an RBI double in the top of the third to make it 2-1, but RBI singles from Jordan Edgerton, Jose Morel, Omar Obergon, and Ozzy Albies scoring four more unanswered runs were enough to finish off the Pirates and send the D-Braves into the playoffs off of two consecutive wins, this one by the score of 6-1.
Ozzy Albies took control of the game for the D-Braves, and singlehandedly scored more runs than the Pirates combined in the final game. Albies finished the game 3-4, with two triples, three runs scored, an RBI and a walk while leading the D-Braves to a big victory. Albies raised his batting average to .356 to finish the season, leading Danville Braves, among players with at least 100 at bats.
The Danville Braves (38-30) and the rest of the Appalachian League have a scheduled off day tomorrow. The D-Braves will be back in action Sunday, set to take on the Princeton Rays (39-28) in the first round of the Appalachian League playoffs. The first pitch of the opening game of the series is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at American Legion Post 325 Field at Dan Daniel Memorial Park.
