Braves Bonged By Bats 7-4

July 29, 2004 - International League (IL) - Louisville Bats News Release

Louisville, KY— The Bats used a four RBI night by Rob Stratton, and a very efficient pitching performance by Jung Keun Bong to piece together a 7-4 victory Wednesday night at Louisville Slugger Field. Bong struggled early, allowing the first three Braves batters to reach, but settled down the rest of the way to pick up the victory, his eighth of the season.

Richmond wasted no time getting on the scoreboard this evening scoring in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. First baseman James Jurries hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to get the scoring started.

The Bats charged right back in the bottom of the inning scoring four times, highlighted by Stratton’s two RBI single to right, with Aaron Holbert scoring on a throwing error by the Braves right fielder Damon Hollins. The Bats left the first inning leading 4-2 after Kenny Kelly’s RBI infield single capped off the scoring attack.

The Bats added more runs in the sixth, pushing three across the plate. Stratton’s two-out two-run single to left scored Jermaine Clark and Jim Chamblee to give the Bats a very comfortable 7-2 lead.

Richmond got two of the runs back in the top of the seventh when Jurries collected his third and fourth RBI of the night on a two-out two-run double to close the Bats lead to 7-4. Before Brian Mallette relieved Brian Shackelford to close the door on the Braves, a power outage caused a 15-minute delay. Aaron Myette took over in the ninth and struggled through the heart of Richmond’s batting order. He allowed two hits, but picked up the save for Louisville, his 16th of the season.

Bong (8-7) started for the Bats going six and one-third innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, striking out four Richmond batters.

Dan Meyer (1-3) started for Richmond, lasting five innings. He gave up four runs on eight hits and picked up the loss for Richmond.

The time of tonight’s game was 2:59 and the attendance was 8,804. The Bats will continue the series with the Braves on Thursday, July 29, 2004 at 7:15 p.m. The starting pitcher for the Bats is RHP Luke Hudson (7-7, 3.32) and RHP Chuck Smith (5-2, 3.92) will start for Richmond.
