Bravehearts Win 6-3
Worcester, Mass. - Following a tough 10-2 loss just the night before to Wachusett in game two of this four game series, the Bravehearts came home to Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field hoping to quickly bounce back.
Tonight, the Bravehearts sent pitcher Zach Whitaker (Saint Leo/Land O Lakes, FL) to the mound, and for the Dirt Dawgs, Anthony Assante (St. Peter's/Brick, NJ) took the mound hoping to win game three of this four game series.
After they jumped out to a quick lead, Wachusett struggled to find their offense and fell behind in a hurry. Zach Whitaker secured his fourth win of the year, putting him at 4-1 on the season, and able to secure the save tonight was Danny Barlok (Holy Cross/Shrewsbury, MA). Losing pitcher for tonight was Wachusett starter Anthony Assante. With a huge ten-run performance just the night before, Wachusett was able to quickly get back in the groove beginning in the top of the second. The Dirt Dawgs were able to get two runners on base, and with two outs, a base hit would score the first run of the game and leave runners on the corners. An effective double steal would then allow the runner to score from third after the throw to second by catcher Nick Barry (UMass-Lowell/Grafton, MA), giving Wachusett the 2-0 lead. The Bravehearts then wasted no time getting their offense on track as well, as they picked things up in the bottom of the second. Two runners were quickly on base after a leadoff single by Mike Coggeshall (Assumption/Shrewsbury, MA) and a Zack Tower (Franklin Pierce/Auburn, MA) HBP walk. A successful bunt by Joe Caico (New Haven/Hopedale, MA) would then load the bases with no outs. The Bravehearts then scored their first run as Coggeshall scored on a groundout by Chad Miller (Saint Leo/Sarasota, FL) and then tied the game at two a piece after a sac-fly by Nick Barry that would allow Tower to score. A wild pitch for Wachusett would then send home Caico, giving the Bravehearts the 3-2 lead. Bravehearts outfielder Joe Caico then got right back into the action with a solo homerun in the fourth that would extend the lead to 4-2. Then, after a single and steal by Zack Tower to start the sixth inning, a single by Chad Miller would send home another run. After a pass ball moves Miller to third and well into scoring position, a groundout by Nick Barry would send in another run for Worcester, stretching the lead to 6-2. The Dirt Dawgs started off the eighth inning well with a single in hopes for a late-game comeback. After a throwing error by Chad Miller that would send in another run, the Dirt Dawgs cut the lead to 6-3. The Bravehearts then brought on relief pitcher Danny Barlok for the close and the Dirt Dawgs saw their chances at a comeback disappear.
Barlok was able to finish it out, securing the 6-3 win for the Bravehearts. The Bravehearts found yet another early deficit, but the bats came to life and carried them to then win behind a great performance from Joe Caico. Although allowing two early runs in the second, Bravehearts pitcher Zach Whitaker was able to settle down, allowing the offense to take the lead. The Bravehearts travel back to Wachusett tomorrow night to take on the Dirt Dawgs in the series finale.
