Worcester Bravehearts News Release
TORRINGTON, Conn. - The Worcester Bravehearts almost learned the hard way that you can never have too many insurance runs.
With the game tied 0-0 after seven innings, Worcester scored six runs in the eighth inning and gave back five runs in the bottom half of the frame in a 6-5 defeat of the Torrington Titans on Aug. 5 at Fuessenich park Park in Torrington, Conn.
With the victory, Worcester will clinch first place in the FCBL Western Division with one more win or another Torrington loss.
First baseman Jordan Berry broke the deadlock with a 2-run home run to left field off Titans reliever Glenn Marrus. After third baseman Mark DeYoung hit an RBI single to score left fielder Brendan O'Reilly, the Bravehearts loaded the bases for right fielder Nate Pajka who uncorked a 3RBI triple to right field and increased his team's lead to 6-0.
The Titans almost drew even in their half of the inning, as Worcester reliever Evan Devico hit the first two batters and walked the next man. Chris Dious replaced Devico but gave up an RBI single to second baseman RJ Going followed by a grand slam by Torrington's designated hitter Langston Calhoun.
Despite the slippage, Dious got the final six outs of the game to close out the victory for the Bravehearts, and Devico got the win to improve to 2-2 this season.
Shrewsbury, Mass., native Josh Desai got the start for Worcester and took a no hitter into the bottom of the sixth inning. Desai gave up only two hits and struck out seven in 6.1 scoreless innings pitched.
Torrington starter Jose Rondon had an even stronger outing, as the Limestone College junior threw seven scoreless innings while striking out eight and surrendering only one hit.
The Bravehearts recorded only five hits in the contest - all from different batters, but Torrington could only muster up four hits in the ball game.
The 30-21 Bravehearts will play their final regular season home game when they host the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide at 7:05 p.m. Aug. 6 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
Worcester will hold Fan Appreciation Night with lobster rolls for sale, a giant lobster give away and fireworks at the conclusion of the game.
