Worcester Bravehearts News Release
WORCESTER - In his first season with the Worcester Bravehearts, first baseman Zack Tower (UMass Lowell / Auburn) is certainly making a name for himself.
One day after scoring the game-winning run on a walk-off base hit, Tower smacked a 3-run blast over the left-center field fence to give his team an 8-5 win in the 14th inning against the Brockton Rox on Monday night, July 27 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
With the game tied 4-4 heading into the 14th, Brockton broke the deadlock when catcher Jonathan Salcedo (Maine / Providence, Rhode Island) hit an RBI single off Bravehearts reliever Nick Freijomil (LIU Brooklyn / Franklinville, New Jersey). Despite the one run, Freijomil got the win and improved to 1-3 on the season.
Trailing by one in the bottom half of the frame, center fielder Ian Strom (UMass Lowell / Hopedale) led off the inning with a double, and designated hitter TJ Riccio (New Haven / Port Jeff Station, New York) followed up with an infield single to put runners on the corners. Strom then took off on a passed ball by Salcedo to tie the game. The Rox then decided to intentionally walk catcher Alex Sanchez (Galveston / New York, New York) to set up Tower for a double play with two men on and no outs.
Despite striking out three times, Tower finished 2-7 with five RBI, and his home run was his 12th of the season. Strom and Sanchez went 3-6 and 3-5 at the plate, respectively, as the Bravehearts outhit the Rox 15-9 in the ballgame.
Brockton infielder Jesus Medina (Sacred Heart / New York, New York) started the game at second base but came in to pitch four innings in relief. Medina took the loss, as he coughed up the lead and surrendered the walk-off home run to Tower.
The Worcester Bravehearts finish off a five-game home stand with a matinee game against the Torrington Titans at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday, July 28 at Hanover Insurance Park. Tickets for all future Bravehearts games are available at the Hanover Insurance Field box office, online at worcesterbravehearts.com, or by calling 508-438-3773.
