Braun Strikes Twice as Red-and-White Top Wizards

July 10, 2010 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release

- Justin Braun continued his strong play, scoring both goals as Chivas USA topped the Kansas City Wizards by a 2-0 score on Saturday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan. Braun now leads the Red-and-White with six goals on the season.

- The win was the first for Chivas USA in MLS Regular Season action since a 4-0 victory at the New England Revolution on May 5. In all competitions, the Red-and-White are now unbeaten in four games, with U.S. Open Cup wins over the Austin Aztex (USSF-2) and Houston Dynamo, and a tie in MLS action last weekend against the Philadelphia Union.

- Braun scored his first goal in the 56th minute, taking a scuffed clearance from Wizards defender Jimmy Conrad and dribbling to the top of the box before hitting a right footed shot to the top right corner. The forward iced the game in the 87th minute with a similar goal, taking another ball from Conrad before hitting a left-footed shot to the top left corner.

- With two goals, Braun goes to six on the season in MLS action, and he also scored twice on Tuesday night in U.S. Open Cup action in Houston in a 3-1 win over the Dynamo. Braun is now tied for fifth in MLS in scoring.

- While Braun grabbed the headlines, it was the Red-and-White's defense that earned the win. Facing 20 shots and 14 corner kicks, Chivas USA held firm, with Yamith Cuesta playing well in his first start of the season. Goalkeeper Zach Thornton made four saves before coming out in the 36th minute after injuring his ankle earlier in the match, and Dan Kennedy made three saves in goal in the remaining 54 minutes.

- The win was the team's first-ever victory in Kansas City, having gone 0-4-1 all-time previously at the Wizards (0-5-1 including playoffs). Chivas USA broke two such streaks this week, having won in Houston for the first time ever on Tuesday in a U.S. Open Cup match.

- Chivas USA Head Coach Martín Vásquez, on tonight's match: "A great effort from our guys, especially coming from playing against Houston a few days ago, and on the road, and against a very good team. We knew it was going to be difficult; winning here 2-0 is going to help us keep building."

- The Red-and-White return to Los Angeles on Sunday and will return to training on Monday morning at The Home Depot Center. The team will train on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. PT on Field 6 ahead of Thursday night's SuperLiga 2010 match against Puebla F.C.

- Chivas USA will also host a press conference at The Home Depot Center after Monday morning's practice, where the team will present new signings Paulo Nagamura and Giancarlo Maldonado. Head Coach Martín Vásquez will be present at the event, which begins at 12:00 noon PT.

- Next home game: Chivas USA returns to The Home Depot Center on Thursday, July 15 at 7:30 p.m. PT in the team's 2010 SuperLiga debut against Puebla F.C. of the Mexican First Division. The match could be the debut for midfielder Paulo Nagamura and forward Giancarlo Maldonado, who will be eligible for the team when the transfer window opens on July 15.
