March 20, 2023 - XFL (XFL)
San Antonio Brahmas News Release
The San Antonio Brahmas led 10-6 at halftime, but the Arlington Renegades scored 6 unanswered points in a defensive battle to capture their third victory of the season in a 12-10 win.
Striking First
The Renegades got on the scoreboard to open the game with a 43-yard field goal from kicker Taylor Russolino. The drive was spurred by passes of 12 and 28 yards from quarterback Kyle Sloter to wide receiver Brandon Arconado. 9:48 remained in the first quarter after the kick.
Turnover Talents
San Antonio recorded an interception in its fourth-straight game when safety Tenny Adewusi picked off Sloter on the first play of Arlington's second drive and returned it for four yards. The pick served as Adewusi's first interception this season.
Touchdown, Brahmas
The Brahmas' first score came with 2:55 left in the first quarter. Taking advantage of Adewusi's interception, quarterback Reid Sinnett connected with wide receiver TJ Vasher from six yards out for a touchdown, the first of the season for Sinnett and the second for Vasher. The score was capped off as the duo connected again for a 1-point conversion, putting San Antonio up 7-3.
Closing the Gap
The Renegades inched closer towards the Brahmas with 10:30 left in the second quarter, as Russolino hit his second field goal of the game, this one from 25 yards out. The kick completed a 7 minute, 15 second, 78-yard drive across two quarters, highlighted by a 12-yard run by running back Kenneth Farrow and a 26-yard pass from Sloter to wide receiver JaVonta Payton.
Showing off the Leg
The Brahmas ended the first half with a 45-yard field goal by kicker Parker Romo to put them on top 10-6 at the half. The Virginia Tech product boasts the XFL's longest field goal of the season at 57 yards in a March 11th loss to the Seattle Sea Dragons.
Saving a Score
The Renegades' defensive back Joe Powell fended off a potential Brahmas score with 9:47 left in the third quarter, picking off Sinnett at the Arlington 1-yard line and returning it to the 2. The interception is the second for Powell this season after recording one last week in a loss to the St. Louis Battlehawks.
Turning it into Points
Arlington turned the interception into points, marching 98 yards downfield on a 14-play possession that culminated with running back De'Veon Smith's 1-yard plunge into the end zone. The ensuing 2-point conversion was incomplete, but the Renegades had taken the lead at 12-10. At 98 yards, it is Arlington's longest drive of the year.
Interception, x3
Defensive back Shakur Brown secured the second interception of the day for the Renegades as he picked off Coan with 2:38 left in the game. Then, with nine seconds remaining, defensive back Darren Evans intercepted Coan to seal the victory for Arlington. It was both players' first takeaway of the season.
Splitting Time
Sinnett and Coan shared the signal-caller position for San Antonio, as the former completed 13 of 19 passes for 97 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Coan connected on seven of 15 attempts for 42 yards and two interceptions. Sinnett had one run for 10 yards, while Coan rushed three times for 16 total yards.
