San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - Ryan Bradley celebrated his 24th birthday in style Sunday evening with a dominant 7 1/3-inning start to lead the San Jose Giants to a 2-1 win over the Visalia Rawhide at Municipal Stadium. Bradley allowed just one run on four hits during his stint on the mound before Chris Wilson and Jose Valdez combined to pick-up the last five outs to seal the victory. The win improves San Jose's second half record to 10-14.
Bradley (5-5) achieved a new career-high in innings pitched with his stellar performance. The left-hander, who walked none and struck out five, retired 22 out of the 26 batters that he faced. Wilson (2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) then recorded the last two outs of the top of the eighth before Valdez (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) stranded the potential tying run at third base in the ninth inning to finish the game. Valdez was credited with his fifth save of the year.
Bradley began his outing by setting down eight consecutive hitters on just 20 total pitches. Visalia scored their only run of the contest in the top of the third when Ryan LaPensee belted a two-out, solo homer to deep left center. The home run gave the Rawhide a 1-0 lead.
Bradin Hagens started on the mound for Visalia and kept the Giants off the scoreboard over the first three innings. Singles from Luke Anders and Jarrett Parker put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the second, but Hagens retired the next two hitters to get out of trouble. In the third, Chris Lofton drew a leadoff walk before Panik singled with one out, however Adam Duvall grounded into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
San Jose though broke through against Hagens with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The inning began with a walk to Anders before Alex Burg drew a two-out walk to put runners on first and second. Bobby Haney was up next and he lined a single into right field to score Anders with the tying run and advance Burg to third. Then with Lofton at the plate, a passed ball on Rawhide catcher Tyson Van Winkle allowed Burg to score giving the Giants a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Bradley surrendered back-to-back one-out singles to Garrett Weber and Van Winkle, but the southpaw struck out Raoul Torrez and then induced LaPensee to bounce into a fielder's choice to end the inning. Bradley then breezed through 1-2-3 sixth and seventh innings to keep San Jose ahead by a run.
In the top of the eighth, Van Winkle led off with a single to right center before Torrez executed a sacrifice bunt to move the potential tying run to second. Wilson was then summoned from the bullpen and he needed just one pitch to retire LaPensee on a groundout before Ender Inciarte lined out to shallow center to end the threat.
Valdez entered the game to begin the top of the ninth and surrendered a leadoff single to Gerson Montilla as Visalia again put the tying run on base. A sacrifice bunt from Mike Freeman advanced Montilla to second before Jon Griffin grounded out to move the tying run to third. Yazy Arbelo was up next, but Valdez got him to strikeout swinging on a 3-2 slider in the dirt to finish the game.
Hagens (2-3) took the loss for the Rawhide after yielding two runs (one earned) on five hits over five innings. He walked four and struck out two. Jeremy Erben (2 IP) and Patrick Schuster (1 IP) then combined for three hitless innings of relief.
