Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR- Left-fielder Bobby Boyd's throw to home plate ended the ballgame Friday night, saving Corpus Christi's 4-3 victory over Arkansas at Dickey-Stephens Park.
With the Hooks (27-27, 74-50) ahead 4-0 in the ninth, Andrew Daniel coaxed a lead-off walk from Michael Freeman. Jabari Henry was next and reached on an error by shortstop Antonio Nunez. Freeman then issued a free pass to Caleb Adams, loading the bases for Wade Wass. On a 1-0 pitch, Wass lined a single into centerfield, putting the Travelers (25-28, 57-66) on the board at 4-1.
Jacob Dorris entered the game and his first pitch plunked pinch-hitter Bo Way, making it a two-run game. With the bases still loaded, Dorris struck out the next two hitters. Alex Yarbrough followed and stroked a flare into shallow left-center. The base hit plated Caleb Adams but Boyd fired a strike to catcher Roberto Pena, who applied the tag on pinch-runner Zach Welz attempting to score from second.
The defensive gem validated a sterling performance by Hooks starter Trent Thornton who fired six shutout innings. Thornton (2-1) scattered five singles and two walks while striking out five. He threw 64 of 93 pitches for strikes.
Kyle Smith backed Thornton's performance with a pair of hitless innings. Smith fanned two and walked one.
Corpus Christi drained Alex Klonowski (0-1), who threw 91 pitches over the first four innings. The Hooks scored twice in the second on four hits, including an RBI single by James Ramsay. Antonio Nunez added a sac fly.
In the fourth, doubles by Roberto Pena and Boyd made it 3-0.
The Hooks struck for a run in the seventh against D.J. Johnson. Boyd opened the frame with a base hit. One-out walks to Ramon Laureano and J.D. Davis loaded the bases for Conrad Gregor, who recorded his 38th RBI with a smash to first base.
Corpus Christi mustered 10 hits and coaxed seven walks on the night. Travs pitchers managed to strand 12 on base.
The Hooks send Francis Martes (8-4, 3.50) to the mound Saturday night. Arkansas counters with lefty Jose Molina (0-3, 5.40). First pitch 7:10.
