Boulders Sneak Past Miners, 4-2

(AUGUSTA, NJ) - Junior Arrojo stole home in the top of the seventh, giving Rockland a 3-2 lead, as Bo Budkevics pitched into the ninth, helping the Boulders (57-31) to a 4-2 win at Sussex County on Friday night. The win was the 57th of the season for Rockland, setting a new franchise record.

A scoreless game until the third saw Rockland take a 1-0 lead on Marcus Nidiffer's RBI sac fly. It was the league-leading 88th RBI for Nidiffer, plating McDonald who reached base for a record 52nd straight game. The Miners (41-46) responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI ground out from Corey Morales before taking the lead in the fourth on Ryan Matthews RBI single.

Budkevics would settle down after the fourth, pitching into the ninth and keeping the Miners off the board. Meanwhile, Sussex County start Julio Rodriguez took a no-hitter into the sixth, despite walking seven batters. After stranding two more runners in the sixth, Rockland took advantage of some poor relief pitching in the seventh.

McDonald and Arrojo would lead off the inning to put runners at first and second with nobody out. A wild pitch from Tony Amezcua allowed both runners to advance before another wild pitch brought McDonald home, tying the game at 2-2. After getting Stephen Cardullo and Joe Maloney went down, Nidiffer came to the plate with Arrojo at third and two outs. Arrojo then stole home when Miners catcher Jayson Hernandez lazily tossed the ball back to the mound, giving Rockland a 3-2 advantage.

The Boulders would an insurance run in the top of the night on Cardullo's RBI sacrifice fly, setting up Budkevics for his fourth complete game. However, Sussex County would put bring the tying run to the plate with two outs before Jamie Keefe brought in closer Luis Sanz. The righty promptly struck out Hernandez to end the game and pick up his 17th save of the year.

Budkevics (4-4) got the win going 8.2 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and four strikeouts. Amezcua (1-3) took the loss giving up two runs in one inning of work.

Both teams pick up their four-game series on Saturday night at 7:00pm at Skylands Stadium.
