HANOVER, Mass. - The Boston Breakers announced today that the club will create an Under-20 team that will compete in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) in 2016.

"The development pathway we have created here at the Boston Breakers is one very unique in the women's game and I believe to be the only one that goes the full extent as we do. Adding the Under-20 team is another important block in this pyramid," Boston Breakers general manager Lee Billiard said. "Not only does it allow us to identify players for the future, but it also allows us to prepare players for the next step up and becoming closer to becoming a professional player."

The Boston Breakers Reserves and College Academy teams have played in the WPSL for the past two summers, with both teams finishing at or near the top of the Northeast Division table.

The Breakers Reserves won the Northeast Division in 2015 with an 11-1-1 record, and they went all the way to the WPSL national semifinals. The College Academy team finished third in the Northeast in 2015.

In 2014, the Reserves and College Academy finished first and second, respectively, in the Northeast Atlantic Division, with the Reserves going unbeaten on the season.

The addition of the U-20 team adds to the Breakers development academy pyramid. Current Breakers Stephanie McCaffrey and Rachel Wood came up through the academy system. McCaffrey led the College Academy team in scoring in 2014, and Wood played for the Reserves that same summer before earning a pro contract following the season. McCaffrey was the No. 5 overall selection in the 2015 National Women's Soccer League College Draft and has since been capped five times by the U.S. Women's National Team.

The Boston Breakers recently partnered with New England Football Club, which will provide a pathway to the Boston Breakers College Academy, reserve, and professional teams.

Tryouts for the Breakers Under-20 team will be held in coordination with the pro, reserve, and college academy tryout, which is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., at Forekicks III (223 Fremont St., Taunton, Mass.).
