HANOVER, Mass. - A goal in the 51st minute from Kristie Mewis extended the Boston Breakers home unbeaten streak this season to four games Saturday night against FC Kansas City at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium.

Mewis found the back of the net after Katie Schoepfer stole a pass intended for Erika Tymrak and fed Mewis at the top of the 18-yard line. Mewis took a few touches before she fired a shot into the top right corner past keeper Nicole Barnhart.

The season-high crowd of 3,176 witnessed the Breakers move into third place with a record of 3-3-1 (10 points)

The Breakers came close to scoring several times in the first half, firing seven shots on goal in the first 45 minutes. In the eighth minute, Julie King's header off of a corner was blocked on the line by the FC Kansas City defense.

"I thought we were dangerous on set pieces. I thought we really should have converted, and I thought we were really dangerous on the corner kicks," Boston Breakers head coach Tom Durkin said.

It was King with the threat once again 10 minutes later when she took advantage of a FC Kansas City turnover at the top of the 18, but Barnhart was able to corral the shot. A few seconds later, Barnhart stopped a shot from Stephanie McCaffrey, who had the ball in close on the net, and then palmed a shot from Mewis off of the rebound over the crossbar.

The Breakers best opportunity of the first half came on a sequence in the 22nd minute. McCaffrey was able to find Maddy Evans running into the box, but the shot went just wide of the left post.

"The attacking movements were really good, the pressing was good, the passing sequences were good," Durkin said. "We penetrated way more than we did in the last game."

In the 37th minute, Boston was unable to capitalize on a four-on-two opportunity when a pass from Schoepfer the middle of the field was unable to connect with McCaffrey, who was running down the left flank.

After Mewis' game-wining goal in the 51st minute, keeper Jami Kranich led the Breakers defense in shutting down the defending NWSL champions, making three saves in the second half.

In the 56th minute, Kranich deflected a shot from Tymrak from the six-yard-line out for a corner. Kranich was there again in the 59th minute to stifle a shot when Liz Bogus ran onto the ball inside the box. A minute later, Kranich

charged off her line to beat Shea Groom to the ball near the top of the box.

Boston continued to put offensive pressure on the Blues in the last 25 minutes. McCaffrey was able to work her way down the right side of the box, but Barnhart was once again able to palm the shot over the crossbar.

In the 88th minute, Nkem Ezurike took a shot from the top of the box over the crossbar, and then a few seconds later did the same was a one-timer in close.

"It would have been nice to score a few more goals, and that was our aim," Durkin said. "We wanted to win this game, 4-0, and I think we could have done it."

The Breakers return to action Saturday, June 6, on the road to face the Washington Spirit. Their next home game is set for June 21 at 4 p.m. ET against Seattle Reign FC. To purchase tickets, visit www.breakerstickets.com.
