Bossier-Shreveport's Cam Abbott Named CHL Rookie of the Year

Published on March 22, 2007 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

Left winger Cam Abbott of the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs has been selected as the Central Hockey League's 2006-2007 Rookie of the Year, as determined through balloting of CHL head coaches, communications departments and selected media members in each market. Buoyed by exceptional play his last 20 games (23 goals, 15 assists for 38 points), Abbott was a very narrow winner in balloting over teammate John DeCaro, who leads all CHL goaltenders with both a 2.27 goals against average and a .929 save percentage, and both New Mexico center Ryan McLeod and Laredo right winger Bobby Chaumont, who tied for third in voting.

A graduate of Cornell University along with teammate and twin brother Chris, Abbott's performance in March has been tremendous, recording 21 points (14 goals, seven assists) in nine games for the Northeast Division champion Mudbugs. His 30 total goals this season leads all first year CHL professionals, as does his 14 power play tallies, while ranking third overall in rookie scoring despite playing in just 42 games. He enters a Friday night contest in Tulsa with the longest goal scoring streak of the CHL season, lighting the lamp in each of his last seven outings, along with a 12 game point streak, the second longest of the CHL season to date.

"Cam has approached his first year of professional hockey with a hard work ethic and relentless drive to win," said Mudbugs Head Coach Scott Muscutt. "He's been a tremendous asset to our team and I'm glad to see his effort recognized by the entire League."

The recipients of the CHL's Most Outstanding Defenseman and Most Outstanding Goaltender awards will be announced on Friday, with the CHL Most Valuable Player award announced Monday, March 26th, in conjunction with the winner of the Joe Burton Scoring Champion award. Already announced earlier this week were the recipients of CHL Athletic Trainer of the Year (Youngstown's Mike Ermatinger), CHL Equipment Manager of the Year (Oklahoma City's Brandon Rose) CHL Coach of the Year (Memphis' Kevin McClelland), Rick Kozuback Award (Arizona Coach Marco Pietroniro) and CHL Man of the Year (Colorado's Riley Nelson) honors, along with both the 2006-2007 All-CHL and All-Rookie teams.
