Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings game notes
June 19, 2007 - arenafootball2 (af2)
Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings News Release
QUICK FACTS:
The BattleWings have this week off.
THE COACH:
Jon Norris (9-2, First season), 19-9 as an af2 head coach.
THE STAKES:
The BattleWings hope the week off give the payers a chance to heal from nagging injuries. NT Quincy Myles has been sidelined, as has OL Greg Hodges. OL Nick Codutti missed two weeks with a series of small injuries.
The schedule down the stretch has the potential to be brutal, so the timing of the week off may prove to be advantageous.
DROP BACK:
Through 11 games in 2006, the BattleWings were 2-9. They had won two of their last four, including a thrilling home victory over the top-ranked Oklahoma City yard Dawgz. They would win just once more and finished the season 3-13.
Through 11 games in 2005, the BattleWings were 3-8, but would not win again and finished the season 3-13.
Through 11 games in 2004, the BattleWings were 4-7 and in the middle of a three-game winning streak on their way to a 5-11 finish.
Through 11 games in 2003, the Battlewings were 3-8 and were three games into an eight-game losing streak to end the seasons 3-13.
Through 11 games in 2002, the BattleWings were 6-5. They would win three of their final five games to finish 9-7, the only winning season in franchise history.
Through 11 games in 2001, the BattleWings were 4-7. They finished up strong, winning 3 of their last 5 to finish 7-9.
THE IFs:
If the BattleWings enjoy the week off, it would:
- Give Jon Norris a chance to think about something other than his obsession with not allowing a sack.
- Give the youngest member of the team, 20-year-old Elex Reed, an opportunity to go a little nuts and maybe drink a Coke.
- Give GM/ PA Announcer Butch Bellah's vocal folds an opportunity to heal.
- Allow Jason Schule a rare opportunity to spend time with his wife and two kids.
- Offer Kendrick Bournes a chance to go to Open Mic Night at the Funny Bone to polish his latest material.
DIVISION STANDINGS:
Southwest
Rio Grande Valley Dorados 9 - 1 .900 5 - 1 .833
Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings 9- 2 .818 6 - 0 1.000
Texas Copperheads 2 - 9 .182 2 - 5 .286
Laredo Lobos 1-9 .100 1 - 4 .200
CC Sharks 1-9 .100 1-5 .167
THAT WACKY SCHEDULE MAKER:
Rio Grande Valley's only loss this season came at the hands of the BattleWings. Their 2007 schedule includes three encounters with the presently 1-9 Laredo Lobos. They also are being forced to run the gauntlet of three showdowns with the currently 1-9 Corpus Christi Sharks.
Let's not overlook the two games against 2-9 Texas.
The BattleWings, of course, play those same teams home and home. The Dorados have defeated the highly-regarded South Georgia Wildcats.
Instead of the extra games against division opponents, the BattleWings have on the schedule the only unbeaten team in af2 (Scranton/ Wilkes Barre), South Georgia, Manchester and Arkansas.
NORRIS SAYS:
"Steel sharpens steel. We like our schedule. Hopefully it works to our advantage in the playoffs"
