Series Record: 1-0 BattleWings
Last Meeting: 62-27 BattleWings on 5/5/07
Streaks: Sharks-L2, BattleWings-W2
Coaches: Mike Trigg (1-8)
Jon Norris (8-2, First season), 18-9 as an af2 head coach.
THE STAKES:
This is a division game for both teams. While they have yet to lose a game within the af2 Southwest this season, the BattleWings nonetheless find themselves trailing Rio Grande Valley in the standings. The Wings must win to keep pressure on the Dorados. The Sharks are looking to pull off a major upset.
THE SERIES: The teams have played once before, a 62-27 Bossier-Shreveport victory in Corpus Christi on May 5, 2007.
LAST TIME THEY MET:
The Battlewings exploded for 40 second half points to cement a 62-27 win over the Sharks. The Battlewings opened the scoring when Quincy Carter passed six yards to Marc Bacote for a 6-0 lead with 3:22 remaining in the first quarter, and they never trailed. Carter touchdown tosses to Manwell Talbert and PJ Winston, combined with a 23 yard Brian Hazelwood field goal made the score 22-0 before the Sharks were able to find the end zone. It was 22-7 at the half.
The Sharks closed to within eight points, 22-14, at the start of the second half. But Carter responded with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Talbert to create a little cushion at 28-14. A Jason Schule touchdown run made it 35-14. Then, The Battlewings' Ken Williams scampered 35 yards with a fumble recovery for a touchdown and the Wings had a 42-14 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Schule ran for another score and Jamaal Perry caught two fourth quarter touchdown passes to round out the scoring. Carter completed 15 of 25 pass attempts for 235 yards and six touchdowns. Perry caught five passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns.
THE IFs:
If the BattleWings defeat Corpus Christi, it would ...
- Give Jon Norris a 19-9 record as an af2 head coach.
- Help them keep pressure on the southwest division front-runners, the RGV Dorados
- Ensure that the BattleWings will have a winning season.
- Give the BattleWings a two-game winning streak against the Sharks

HEAD COACHES:
MIKE TRIGG, HEAD COACH - CORPUS CHRISTI SHARKS
Mike Trigg knows a thing or two about Arena Football: 167 games coached at the AFL level, head coach of the Arena Bowl XXV champion Grand Rapids Rampage, and the 2001 Coach of the Year award, just to name a few of his qualifications. An alum of East Texas State, Trigg was most recently the head coach of the Philadelphia Soul of the AFL in 2004-05. Prior to taking the helm of the Soul, Trigg spent 1998-2003 in Grand Rapids, where he won Arena Bowl XXV in 2001. He has experienced success playing in the AFL as well as a member of the Detroit Drive in 1989-90, including victories in Arena Bowl III and IV. Trigg began his coaching career in 1994 with the Fort Worth Cavalry. He also coached the Milwaukee Mustangs from 1995-97.
Jon Norris, Bossier - Shreveport: (First season)
Jon Norris came to the BattleWings from the Austin Wranglers of the AFL where he served as the Defensive Coordinator and Line Coach. He made a demonstrative difference in Austin where in 2005, the offensive line gave up only 4 sacks which ed the AFL. Norris spent 3 seasons with the Dallas Desperados in the AFL where he served as line coach and special teams coach. His line racked up some impressive stats, both offensively and defensively. Under Norris' leadership, Will Pettis led AFL with 88 kickoff returns for 1750 yards and 4 TD's. Norris moved to Dallas after a stint as assistant head coach and offensive and defensive line coach for the Oklahoma Wranglers. His Oklahoma defense finished 3rd in AFL with 21 sacks.
Norris served as head coach for the Tulsa Talons (af2) and led them to the playoffs in their inaugural season with an offense that averaged 52.7 points per game and a defense that led the league with 33 interceptions
Norris spent time in the NFL with the New England Patriots in 1984 and 1985. He played for the Chicago Bears in 1987 and 1988. Norris is married with two sons.
THIS WEEK'S QUOTES:
Jon Norris, on the Sharks
"Their ownership is making an effort day to day and week to week to improve their product on the field. They seem to be succeeding. This is not the same team we saw back in April."
On his defensive line: "We have done a good job over the last couple of weeks getting pressure on opposing quarterbacks. We believe our success defensively flows from that"
On his receiving corps: "We have been very fortunate to have a lot of depth at receiver. Our quarterbacks have been successful in large part because of that. We lost a key player when Anthony Chambers was hurt, but I like what I've seen so far from Tramissian Davis. He is a great complement to our starters."
#22 - Phillip Geiggar is among af2 leaders in interception return yardage.
PLAYERS/MATCHUPS TO WATCH:
- The Sharks' electrifying return man Ivory McCann against BattleWings' kick coverage.
- Jason Schule any time he touches the ball.
- Jon Norris coaching against a team owned by one of his mentors, Joe Avezzano.
- The Wings' defensive line against the porous Sharks offensive protection.
- The Wings' crafty and sure-handed receiving corps against the af2's 10th-rated pass defense.
