Bonnie Blair greets Wave's 'Tournament of Champions'
November 6, 2007 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE (Nov. 6, 2007) -- Few athletes carry the mantle of "champion" as surely and gracefully as Wisconsin's own Bonnie Blair. A six-time Olympic gold medalist in speed skating, Blair is the most decorated Winter Olympian in our nation's history. She has been honored as Sports Illustrated's Sportswoman of the Year, the Sullivan Award winner as the nation's top amateur athlete, and is in the United States Olympic Committee's Hall of Fame.
Despite those honors she remains a humble and accessible Wisconsin girl, a true champion in every sense. On Nov. 17, Blair will greet and present medals to winning youth soccer teams prior to the Wave's 6 p.m. game against the Orlando Sharks at U.S. Cellular Arena.
"We're so honored to welcome Bonnie Blair as a guest for our Tournament of Champions night," said Matt Schroeder, director of public, media and community relations for the Wave. "Every young athlete should have the opportunity to meet one of the most accomplished performers in her sport; even a handshake and a smile will be remembered for a lifetime."
Bonnie is widely admired for her combination of modesty and confidence. A professional writer summarized her appeal by praising her unassuming manner and charm: "Your modesty in accepting the medal, holding back the tears, your bright smile when thanking the Olympic official, your tender words to those you defeated - all of these characteristics endeared you to the mass of viewers in our nation and abroad."
The Wave, four-time champions of indoor soccer, will be playing the expansion Sharks for the first time. Also that night is the third annual Spirit Competition, featuring dance teams from around southeastern Wisconsin.
Any team that has won a league or tournament championship can meet Bonnie Blair by calling (414) 224-9283. Tickets start at just $16 and group discounts are available.
