Bombers Take Series Over Flying Chanclas in 13-Inning Barn Burner

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Brazos Valley Bombers defeated the San Antonio Flying Chanclas Thursday night, 6-5, to close the team's road trip with the Texas Collegiate League's longest game of the season.

A defensive nine innings pushed the game into extra frames for the second night in a row, ultimately finishing with Brazos Valley clinching the series. The Bombers are the first TCL team to win a best-of-three over the first place Flying Chanclas. The navy and gold can now look forward to a celebratory firework show set to light the sky Friday night at Edible Field.

Not wanting to lose a series for the first time this season, San Antonio came into the first inning on a mission, plating one with an RBI single to left field.

The Bombers, however, did not let the run go unanswered. A rally in the fourth inning gave Brazos Valley the lead. Base hits by third baseman Troy Viola, designated hitter Ryan Snell, shortstop Bobby Lada and left fielder Chris Shull scored center fielder Grayson Tatrow, Viola and Snell. A sacrifice fly by right fielder Brett Squires brought home Lada, giving the navy and gold a three-run lead for the first time of the series.

San Antonio added three runs in the bottom of the ninth to knot the score at four, sending the matchup into extended play.

The teams traded one run each in the twelfth inning, highlighted by a sliding RBI double from Brazos Valley first baseman Shelby Becker to score catcher Hudson Polk.

Just one frame later, Daniel Altman stepped up to the plate for the first time of the night. The pinch hitter blasted a single to right field, scoring Snell and securing the hard-earned victory.

Instead of the team prioritizing its offense, the Bombers bullpen got to showcase its versatility by employing more faces on the mound than in any other game this summer. Six pitchers came together to record 17 strikeouts across 13 innings; starter Andrew Hill and relief pitcher Mason Bryant co-led the evening, adding four each to their resumes, before closer Zach Poe ended the 13th with two must-have sit-downs.

With the series finale in the record books, Brazos Valley climbs to a 10-11 record while San Antonio falls to 13-4 on the season. Half of the Flying Chanclas' losses this season are now at the hands of Bombers head coach James Dillard's squad.

The Bombers return to action Friday, June 25 at Edible Field to kick off a two-game series against the Acadiana Cane Cutters. Friday and Saturday will both feature fireworks-themed welcome home celebrations marking the end of the Bombers' long road trip.
