Bryan-College Station, TX - The Brazos Valley Bombers (15-5) downed the Woodlands Strykers (6-13) 6-1 Friday night, improving to 7-1 against the team on the season.
"It was a good win on Friday night in front of a packed house," said Curtis Dixon, Bombers head coach. "It was good to see all these people out tonight."
The Bombers put up two runs in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on a Strykers error to score center fielder Matt Hilston followed by a single from G.R. Hinsley that scored right fielder Hunter Haley.
Starting pitcher Mike Walker kept the Bombers' lead intact, going eight innings with nine strikeouts while surrendering only one run in his 133 pitch outing.
"My slider was on today, and I just did a good job mixing speeds, changing pitches, and hitting my spots," Walker said. "Normally the first couple of innings are my toughest ones, but once I get rolling I don't really notice any kind of exhaustion- I just keep going."
After adding an insurance run in the fifth, the Bombers would score three in the eighth inning to stretch their lead to 6-1. Closer Cannon Chadwick would sit the Strykers down in order in the ninth to earn Walker his second win of the season.
"[Walker] did a good job," Dixon said. "He was stronger as the game went on, his pitch count was good and he pitched efficiently. He wanted the ninth inning, but I wasn't going to give it to him."
The Bombers will host the Texas Marshals Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at Cellucor Field. Kids 12 and under will be admitted for free, eat for free, and play for free as part of Kids Free Saturday presented by Chicken Express.
