TCL Brazos Valley Bombers

Bombers Take Both Games of Doubleheader Against Aces

June 24, 2011 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
Brazos Valley Bombers News Release

The Bombers continued their winning ways on Thursday, coming out on top in both games of their doubleheader against the Alexandria Aces. The victories push the team's current winning streak to 6 games, including 9 of their last 10 overall, and the team is just a half game out of first place in the TCL standings. The Bombers won both games in their customary fashion of late: stellar starting pitching and timely offense.

In the first game of the day, the Bombers won by a score of 3-1 in a 7-inning contest. While pitcher Drew Olson was electric, allowing just 1 run and striking out 8 in 6 innings pitched, the team headed into the final frame down 1-0. With their backs against the wall, the Bombers' bats went to work, putting up 3 runs to take the lead for good. Casey Dykes led off the inning with a double, and came around to score off a single by John Cannon, who ultimately scored the winning run. Garrett Shepperd came on to close the door on the Aces and earn the save. Shepperd is now tied for the TCL lead with 5 games saved on the season.

For the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Bombers maintained their momentum at the plate from the start, scoring 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning. Scott Arthur, Casey Dykes, and Herb Romero all drove in runs during the inning, with Christian Soberanes driving a runner in during the 6th inning. The pitching staff was locked in again, as 3 pitchers combined to allow just 4 hits and 1 unearned run during the 7-inning affair. Damian Rivera pitched 5 solid innings to pick up the win, and Aaron Dunahoe closed out the game to record his first save of the season.

Also worthy of mention was the performance of Scott Arthur. Arthur plays his collegiate career at Texas A&M, and joined the team today following the Aggies' unfortunate elimination from the College World Series. He provided a boost in both games, driving in a run in each contest and reaching base in 3 of his 4 plate appearances while playing both second base and center field. When asked about the impending arrival of the Aggie players to the Bombers' team, Head Coach Brent Alumbaugh stated "anytime you can add quality hitters to your roster, you're going to lengthen your lineup." It's safe to say Arthur fits that description.

The Bombers wrap up their 4 game road trip on Friday and Saturday with games in Coppell against the Copperheads. The team will return home next Monday, where fans are thrilled about the UPA Kids Zone being 100% FREE to all kids in attendance. Next Tuesday's game is Guaranteed Win Night at the ballpark, brought to you by Jones & Lowe Agency, where if the Bombers fail to deliver a win, every fan in the park will be able to get into another game FREE of charge.
