June 24, 2011 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release

When the Pump Jacks and Cane Cutters square off, nothing is guaranteed.

Such was the case Thursday night at historic Driller Park as the Cane

Cutters benefitted from five Pump Jacks errors to take the 7-4 win, splitting the two-game series.

With the loss, the Jacks slip back into second place tie with the Brazos Valley Bombers a half-game behind the Cutters in the Texas Collegiate League standings.

Donnie Hart took a tough-luck loss, tossing five innings, allowing only two earned runs on five hits. Hart struck out eight, marking his highest total on the season and giving him 16 in three starts, trailing only James Guillen with 17. Hart's record drops to 2-1 on the summer.

Kash Kalkowski belted two doubles, giving him a TCL high eight. He was also hit by a pitch, giving him nine on the season, another TCL lead. Zach Looney went 2-for-4 at the plate, with a double and a run scored. Beau Maggi continued his hot start with the Jacks, going 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Colton Bickerstaff and Tyler Girouard each added RBI singles while Jake Pinchback knocked in one with a sacrifice fly.

Ty Marlow took over for Girouard at the plate in the sixth and went 2-for-2 with a single and double. Marlow also had a great inning in the field, fielding two grounders and snagging a line drive out of the air in the seventh.

Kirby Pellant stole two bases, bringing his season total to eight. Bickerstaff took his second bag of the season.

The Cane Cutters jumped out to an early two run lead in the top of the first, allowing two runs on one hit, an error and a hit by pitch from Hart.

The Jacks answered quickly in the bottom half with Pellant reaching on a bunt single, advancing to second on a stolen base and then scoring on a single from Maggi. The Jacks added another in the second with Bickerstaff scoring on a sacrifice fly from Pinchback.

With the game squared at two, the Jacks added two more with RBI singles from Bickerstaff and Girouard. Bickerstaff was thrown out at home on Girouard's single in a very close play at the plate.

The play would be a turning point in the game for the Jacks, who fall to 11-9 on the season.

Aside from a double from Looney in the fifth, Cutters starter Kaleb Manuel would then silence the Jacks bats, setting them down in order in his final two innings.

Ryan Downing reached on an error to start the fifth and scored on an error from Hart, cutting the Jacks lead to one. Hart pitched out of a jam, striking out the final three swinging in a row to end the fifth.

Hart hit the first batter he faced and walked the next to start out the sixth, ending his night.

Jaron Long took over in relief on his first day in East Texas. Long hails from Chandler, Ariz., and joins fellow Chandler Gilbert Community College teammates Pellant and Tyler Giannonatti and Jacks pitching coach Robby McClellan on the Jacks roster.

His first appearance was a tough one as the Cutters scored four on two defensive errors, a walk and two infield singles. Showing bunt in almost every at bat in the inning, the hardest hit ball by the Cutters was a line drive to Pellant, which turned into a double play at third base to end the inning. The rough inning gave the Cutters the 7-4 lead, which is how the game would end.

Long came out in the eighth and sat the Cutters down in order with the help of a barehanded play by Ty Marlow at second base.

Jordan Hershiser came on in the ninth and retired the side in order.

The Generals return to town Friday, June 24, for Fireworks Friday presented by Allied Waste and KLTV News. The Jacks will light up the night sky after the game with a spectacular fireworks show. Fireworks Fridays have become a tradition and a fan favorite at historic Driller Park, with every show better than the last, so don't miss it!
