Jacks Fall to Bombers in Brazos Valley

August 7, 2015 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
East Texas PumpJacks News Release

It may have just been for stats, but Michael Brinska brought his 'A' game.

The East Texas Pump Jacks fell to the Brazos Valley Bombers 1-0 on Thursday in Bryan in the second-to-last game of the regular season.

Both teams have already locked up a first-round playoff meeting on Saturday, so the season's final series amounts to a sparring session before the more meaningful fight over the weekend.

No matter the circumstances, Brinska was on his game. Facing the league's top offense, he went the distance, allowing just one run in eight innings of work. He notched six strikeouts and walked just one. In three late-season starts against playoff-bound teams (two versus the Bombers, one against the Acadiana Cane Cutters), Brinska has an ERA of just 1.27.

The two teams traded baserunners for the first six innings without a run. Brazos Valley put two runners in scoring position in both the second and the third innings, and another runner on third in the fourth frame, but Brinska worked out of the jams.

The Pump Jacks had runners on in all but two innings, but couldn't string together the hits necessary to push a run across.

The Bombers picked up the game's only run in the seventh, when Joel Davis worked a full-count walk, then Jimmy Norris lined a two-out triple to left.

The Pump Jacks offense mustered six hits, half of them coming off the bat of catcher Tyler Moore. Moore finished the night 3-for-3, and he also threw out the only baserunner who tried to steal against him.

The Jacks and Bombers meet again Friday night in the regular season's final game.

Playoffs

The Pump Jacks open the postseason on Saturday, when they remain in Bryan to take on the Bombers in a one-game playoff.

If the Jacks win Saturday, they'll advance to the TCL Championship Series for the third time in team history. The best-of-three final would begin with a home game at Irwin UT Tyler Ballpark on Sunday, August 9, then conclude with Games 2 and 3 on the road.
