Brazos Valley Bombers News Release
Bryan-College Station, Texas - Bomber fans definitely got their money's worth tonight as the Friday Night Fireworks matchup between the Seguin River Monsters (3-6) and Brazos Valley Bombers (5-3) ran late into the evening, lasting just under four hours. The Bombers win the grueling affair 9-4 off 8 hits and 13 strikeouts from the Bombers bullpen.
Although the entire lineup hit reasonably well, Bombers shortstop Davis Powell had his best performance of the season and was the most consistent batter of the night for the Brazos Valley. Powell accounted for 3 of the Bombers 8 hits in the game, going 3 for 5 at the plate with one strikeout.
There was an ebb and flow in the pitching performances from both sides. In total, 23 batters were walked through the 8.5-inning game, 10 walks were allowed by the River Monsters and 13 walks were given up by the Bombers. Bombers' pitcher Austin Teel (3.38 ERA), who started on the mound, and Dereck Saenz (3.38 ERA), who came in as relief in the middle of the 4th, had terrific pitching performances. Both got through three innings without allowing a score or a hit and ensured the Bombers' lead stayed strong throughout the ballgame.
Most of the game's action took place before the firework show in the middle of the 5th inning, with 12 out of the 13 runs coming before the stoppage.
The Bombers came out of the gates looking for revenge on the River Monsters for last night's poor performance and they did just that, scoring at least once in all four of the first innings! The Bombers put two runs on the board within the first three batters, Shelby Becker drove in leadoff man Travis Chestnut and Becker scored from 3rd the following at-bat by right fielder Brayden Evans.
The home squad added another run in the bottom of the 2nd. Catcher Wyatt Grant scores to bring the Bombers' lead up to three. Tyner Hughes stole home for another Bombers' run in the 3rd off a wild pitch to the backstop.
The visiting River Monsters tied the game up in the 4th, scoring four in a two-out rally after pitcher AJ Kostic managed to shut down two of the first three Seguin batters. Two of the runs given up to the "Sters" were off Bomber errors, walking in one and allowing another to score off a wild pitch by Kostic. The other two runs were scored off an RBI single from Jacob Elizondo.
The Bombers were quick to reclaim their four-run lead in the following half inning, with Riley Bender, Becker, Chestnut, and Hughes all scoring.
Following the mid-5th inning firework show, the only run scored was by the Bombers in the bottom of the 8th. Substitute 3rd baseman Jake Rabe extended the Bombers' lead to five.
Although at time the pitching performances were lack luster, on numerous occasions throughout the game, the Bombers' managed to get that crucial third out of the inning with multiple Seguin runners left on base to keep the game out of reach from the River Monsters.
The Bombers take a 9-5 victory and split their home series with the Seguin River Monsters. The team has a day off to rest before traveling to Victoria to play the Generals on Sunday, June 12th. The Bombers are back at Edible Field on Tuesday, June 14th.
