Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton, OH- For the third straight game the Bombers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but the Nailers answered right away with two goals to take a 2-1 lead in the first.
A packed house of over 7,600 filled the Nutter Center for the final game of the 2005-2006 season as the Bombers tried to dash the hopes of a Division title for the Wheeling Nailers.
Jeremy Van Hoof (5) gave the Bombers the 1-0 lead on the power play off a couple of great passes by A.J. MacLean (16) and Paul Kelly (12) at the 1:46 mark in the first period. With that goal Van Hoof set a new career high in points with twenty on the season.
The Nailers answered right back on a goal by Sean Collins at the 2:55 mark, and then Wheeling took the lead less than two minutes later at the 4:35 mark thanks to Curtiss Patrick.
Jeff Legue, tied it at 2-2 on the Bombers 4th short handed goal of the season, assists to Van Hoof (16) and Tim Konsorada (32) at the 8:09 mark of the first period.
Both starting goaltenders, Andy Franck for the Nailers and David Currie for the Bombers stood their ground throughout the rest of the first and that allowed the teams to head to the dressing room tied at 2-2.
In the second, the Nailers (knowing that first place could be on the line) showed a sense of urgency early and added two goals in the second to take a 4-2 lead.
The Bombers had their chances in the second, out shooting the Nailers 10-6, but Franck held the lead and the Bombers trailed 4-2 at the end of two periods of play.
Early on in the third it was clear that Wheeling was content with the two goal lead, as they forced the Bombers to play a lot of dump and chase on both ends of the ice.
Despite the slow start to the period, the Bombers cut the two goal deficit to one thanks to Andy Cote (4) becoming the benefactor of a rebound in the Nailers crease, off an initial shot by Kelly (13), who tried to complete a one timer given to him by MacLean (17).
So with over 14 minutes remaining the Bombers continued to put the pressure on Franck and the Nailers, but Wheeling countered that with some pressure of their own.
Although the Bombers threw everything they possibly could, including an extra attacker with under a minute to play, Wheeling was able to hold on for the 4-3 victory.
Possibly a solace for the Bombers and their fans was the fact that Toledo earned a point in Johnstown and the Nailers could not celebrate a Division title on the Nutter Center ice.
Season tickets for the 2006-2007 season are now on sale. A $50.00 deposit reserves your seat for next season. For more information contact the Dayton Bombers at 775-4747 or log on to www.daytonbombers.com
