WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers solidified their defensive secondary today with the announcement that defensive halfback Kelly Malveaux and cornerback Robert Bean have inked new deals with the football club.

As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Malveaux (5-9, 190, 190, Arizona '97, DOB: Nov. 5, 1976 in Bellflower, Calif.) is regarded as one of the top lock-down defensive backs in the CFL and was a steadying influence on the Blue & Gold's secondary in 2006.

He started all 18 regular season games for the Bombers, including one at linebacker, as well as the team's lone playoff contest. His regular season numbers included 52 defensive tackles, which ranked fourth on the Bombers, as well as one special teams tackle, one quarterback sack and one forced fumble. Malveaux tied with fellow defensive halfback Anthony Malbrough for the team lead in pass knockdowns with six.

Malveaux was originally acquired by the Blue Bombers on April 20, 2006 in a trade with the Montreal Alouettes in exchange for a sixth round pick in the 2006 CFL Canadian Draft.

Malveaux has appeared in a total of 106 regular season games during his CFL career, including stints with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Calgary Stampeders, Montreal Alouettes and Winnipeg. He also spent time with the New England Patriots in 2000.

"The play of Kelly Malveaux this season was a big part of the improved play of our defensive secondary from a year ago," said Bombers G.M. Brendan Taman. "We are glad to be able to lock-up a player of his caliber for the foreseeable future."

Bean (5-11, 163, Mississippi State '99, DOB: Jan. 6, 1978 in Atlanta, Ga.) joined the Bombers as a free agent on April 19, 2006. It didn't take him long to get acclimated to the Canadian brand of football.

He appeared in 13 regular season games for the Big Blue, including nine starts, as well as one post-season start. His regular season numbers included four interceptions, which was tops among Bomber defenders, as well as four pass knockdowns, two tackles for losses, 22 defensive tackles and two special teams tackles.

Prior to joining the Blue Bombers, Bean spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL. He was a fifth round pick of the Bengals in the 2000 NFL Draft.

"We're extremely pleased to have someone like Robert Bean back in the fold," Taman said. "He has the ability and potential to be one of the best cornerbacks in this league."
