Bombers Head to Springfield with Chance to Clinch Maul

Dubois County Bombers News Release

HUNTINGBURG, Ind. - The 12-game series between the Dubois County Bombers and the Springfield Sliders is halfway complete in the 2012 season for the Prospect League, but a sweep of the two-game set in Springfield, Ill., would give Dubois County seven wins, clinching the head-to-head matchup.

Why is this important?

Before the season, the Bombers and the Sliders decided to make their series worth a little extra. The winner earns the right to claim Abraham Lincoln.

Lincoln grew up roughly half an hour south of the Bombers' home field, League Stadium in Huntingburg, Ind., and lived there from age seven until early adulthood.

He moved to the Springfield area after and developed his career as a lawyer and politician.

Both areas (as well as Lincoln's birthplace in Kentucky) claim the rights to Lincoln's heritage.

This season, the Bombers and Sliders decided to let their play on the baseball diamond determine who is correct in making this claim.

The physical symbol of this prize is the coveted "Lincoln Maul," a large mallet that's similar to something Lincoln would have used.

The Sliders have the maul as of now, courtesy of an 11-8 win June 22 at League Stadium, but the Bombers lead the season series 5-1.

A win tonight and another tomorrow would bring the maul back to Dubois County for good.
