Bombers Complete Four-Game Generals Sweep

June 19, 2019 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL) - Brazos Valley Bombers News Release

Bryan/College Station, TX - The Brazos Valley Bombers routed the Victoria Generals 11-5 at home to put a stranglehold on the top of the Texas Collegiate League standings.

The Bombers put Tyler Flores on the mound to start the night. This was the fourth start of the season for the Texas A&M University at Kingsville product.

Hunter Coleman kicked things off with an RBI single in the first inning that pushed Cole Coker across the plate. Matthew Swick found himself in trouble on the mound with a loaded bases situation, and Chase Kemp boomed a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Logan Sartori to get in on the action early. Hunter Coleman dashed home himself on a wild pitch to give the Bombers a three-run lead in the first inning.

Swick loaded the bases again in the bottom of the second and struck Hunter Coleman in the side to force Jacob Padilla home. Sam McElreath stepped up to the plate next and dropped a two-RBI single to right field to extend the Bombers lead to 6-0.

A pair of Generals batters found themselves on base due to an error and a walk, and a stolen bag from each of them threatened the Bombers shutout in the top of the third. Coby Potvin capitalized on the opportunity to put the away squad on the board with a sacrifice ground-out to score Jonathan Tapia.

Flores' no-hitter ended in the top of the fourth with a single from Payton Robertson, who scored quickly off a double from Jordan Johnson. Flores struck out the following batter and then let Cole Sichley take the mound in relief to finish out the inning.

Flores finished the day with four strikeouts, two hits allowed and one earned run in 3.1 innings. The Generals plated one more before the end of the inning to bring the game to 6-3.

In the top of the fifth inning, Sichley balked, allowing another General across the plate to cut the Bombers lead to two. Sichley's day ended after two strikeouts, three hits and one run across 1.2 innings.

Brian Williams took the mound to start the sixth inning. The Prairie View A&M Panther struck out two and walked one in two innings for the Bombers.

In a moment of déja vu for the Generals, Jonathan Jimenez struck Hunter Coleman with a pitch to put three on for the Bombers. Kemp continued his extra-base hit streak with a blast to center field that brought all three runners home for a 9-4 lead.

"Really, I'm just trying to hit fastballs early in the count and do damages with the pitches that I can," said Kemp postgame.

The Bombers built on their lead in the bottom of the seventh as a result of a Generals fielding error.

Bryce Bennett entered late to preserve the Bombers sizable lead.

The bottom of the eighth brought about another run for Brazos Valley as Hunter Coleman jogged home on a wild pitch, fresh off his third hit-by-pitch of the day.

The Generals scored one in the final inning on Bennett's watch, but the Normangee, TX native pumped two strikeouts over a two-inning stretch to keep the Bombers on top 11-5.

Swick received the loss for the Generals, having given up six runs- three earned- and only recording a single strikeout over the first five innings of the game. Ryan Flores kept up his assault on the Bombers with a single on the day, but it would be his only hit during three at-bats in the contest. Potvin, Johnson and Chase Evans recorded RBIs for the Generals.

The Bombers improve to 15-3. Brazos Valley will receive a two-day reprise from the game before heading to Texarkana this weekend.

"It's much needed," said General Manager Brian Nelson of the short break. "We've played 18 [games] in 20 days, and we're at the back end of a 10-day stretch. We're coming off at a perfect time."
