Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers added some experience to their defensive secondary and special teams units today with the acquisition of Mike Crumb.
The Bombers acquired Crumb from the Toronto Argonauts in exchange for quarterback Spergon Wynn. The club also moved up in the 2006 CFL Draft by acquiring Toronto's second round pick.
"Upgrading our defensive secondary and special teams units was a priority going into this off-season and we believe this deal addresses that issue," said Bombers G.M. Brendan Taman.
"Unfortunately we had to give up a quality player to do so, but we feel this trade will significantly upgrade our team in both of those areas."
Crumb (6-0, 194, Saskatchewan '98 DOB: Nov. 24, 1970) was a special teams ace for the Argos this past season. He tied for sixth place on the team in special teams tackles with seven. The safety also had one defensive tackle and eight hits.
The Kelowna, B.C. native broke into the CFL in 1998 when he signed as a free agent with the hometown B.C. Lions. after a stellar collegiate career with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. He played a total of five seasons with the Leos between 1998 and 2002.
In 2003, Crumb signed with the Toronto Argonauts and spent the next three seasons with the Boatmen. One of the highlights of his CFL career was winning a Grey Cup as a member of the Argos in 2004. Ironically, that victory came against his former team, the B.C. Lions, and his brother Jason, who played for the Leos.
Wynn spent just one season as a member of the Blue Bombers after being acquired in an April 13, 2005 trade with the B.C. Lions. He dressed for just three regular season games in 2005 due to injury. He also spent time in the NFL as a member of the Cleveland Browns (2000) and Minnesota Vikings (2001-02).
Other Notes:
The team also announced that it has declined to pick up the option of linebacker Lamar McGriggs.
