Bolts sign Powell and McMillan

November 10, 2005 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1)
Rockford Lightning News Release

The Rockford Lightning announced that they have signed forwards Roger Powell Jr. and Paul McMillan to the roster, pending league approval. Terms and conditions of the contracts were not disclosed. Powell played his college basketball at the University of Illinois, while McMillan played for Loyola University in Chicago.

Powell, a 6-foot-6 forward from Joliet, IL, started all 39 games for the Fighting Illini during their magical season in 2004-2005. He ranked 22nd in the Big Ten in scoring and 11th in rebounding with 12.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. He also finished the season ranked eighth in the Big Ten in field goal shooting at 54.9 percent, bringing his career percentage to 57.2 and placing him fifth in school history. Powell was named honorable mention All-Big Ten by both league coaches and media following his senior season in which the Illini played for the National Championship against the University of North Carolina.

The Lightning drafted Powell in the fourth round (30th overall selection) of the CBA draft in 2005. He has spent the off-season in Seattle battling for a position with the Seattle Supersonics of the NBA. Along with earning a degree in speech communications, Powell is also a licensed Pentecostal minister.

McMillan, a 6-foot-6 forward from Cincinnati, OH, played his senior season with the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers in 2003-2004. He earned Second Team All-League honors in the Horizon League during his final season, leading the Ramblers with averages of 17.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. He spent the 2004-2005 season playing overseas for France and Switzerland and finished up playing in Venezuela this last spring before joining the Lightning.

"That's the funny thing about the CBA," said Lightning Head Coach Chris Daleo, "One day we are struggling to find a three-man, and now we have two quality three-men who play very hard. Both are great guys and are excited to be here."

The Lightning home opener is less than two weeks away. Great seats are still available for the home opener at the MetroCentre against the Gary Steelheads on Sunday, November 20, at 5:05 PM. Season ticket packages are also available by calling the Rockford Lightning front office at 815-874-4232 or by visiting the team website at www.rockfordlightning.com. Ticket packages start as low as $74.75 and can be purchased in full, half, and 7 game packages.
