Former CBA All-Star Melvin Sanders Signs/Plays for San Antonio Spurs

Boise, ID (November 10, 2005) - Melvin Sanders, who was a member of the 2005 Continental Basketball Association All-Star team, All-Defensive Team, and named All-League Second Team, signed a contract with the defending NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Sanders grabbed two rebounds and was 0-for-1 from the field in just under four minutes of action last night as the Spurs downed the Charlotte Bobcats, 94-86.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound guard played in 48 games for the Dakota Wizards last season, averaging 18.7 points and 5.8 rebounds. Sanders, an Oklahoma State product, was one of 59 CBA alums in NBA training camps this preseason, competing for a spot with the Spurs. He played seven preseason contests with the Spurs, averaging 6.3 points, 2.6 assists and 0.9 rebounds in 14.9 minutes per contest. Sanders had his best preseason outing versus the Philadelphia 76ers on October 12, when he paced the Spurs with 18 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and had 3 steals in 27 minutes. Sanders was released by the Spurs on October 26.

Sanders averaged 15.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.0 assists in five games with the Spurs summer league team at the 2005 Rocky Mountain Revue.

The Spurs (4-1) next play Friday, Nov. 11, when they travel to Boston to take on the Celtics. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST.
