
Boise Wins Series Opener in Critical Set with Salem-Keizer

The Boise Hawks (27-28, 7-12) defeated the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (29-28, 9-9) by a final score of 9-5 on Tuesday night. In the 8th inning, Boise got a big hit from Willie Maciver to break the tie, and a huge bases clearing triple from Hidekel Gonzalez that gave the Hawks a four-run lead as the Hawks held on for a win.
The Hawks scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Singles from Terrin Vavra and Luke Morgan, along with a walk from Cade Harris, brought Jeff Bohling to the plate later in the inning with two outs. Bohling slapped an RBI-single into left-field making it 2-0 Hawks.
But Salem-Keizer, one of the best offensive teams in the Northwest League, showed up in the 2nd inning. Hawks starter Jeffri Ocando allowed five runs, four of them earned in the 2nd inning. David Villar led the inning off with a solo home run, it was an RBI single for Will Albertson in the frame and the big hit in the inning came on a two-RBI triple from Kyle McPherson.
The Volcanoes added one more on an error from Terrin Vavra on a throw to first base, that scored a run from third-base, and the Volcanoes led 5-2.
But Jeffri Ocando settled down on the mound and he finishes the night going 6.1 innings-pitched while striking out five and allowing five runs, with four of them earned getting a no-decision.
Boise added two runs in the 4th inning making it just a 5-4 lead for Salem-Keizer. It was LJ Hatch with a two-RBI single. Hatch finishes 3-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
In the 5th inning, Cade Harris tied it up with his 6th home run of the year on a solo shot. With the score tied at five, the Hawks got singles from Hatch and Luke Morgan to start the inning. Willie MacIver doubled and Hatch scored making it 6-5 Hawks. The big blow came off the bat of Hidekel Gonzalez. With the bases loaded, Gonzalez cleared them and Boise took a 9-5 lead. The Hawks held on in the 9th as Shelby Lackey gave up a single to begin the inning, but got three straight strikeouts to end the game.
The Hawks fall just two games back behind Salem-Keizer for 2nd place in the Northwest League South second-half standings.
