AUSTIN, MN--Throughout the season, Bobcat head coach Layne Sedevie has stressed the need for a championship team to win in an opponent's building.
Saturday night's performance by the Bobcats was championship quality.
On the road visiting the first-place team in the NAHL Central Division, Bobcat goalie Aaron Nelson (Bismarck, ND) recorded his third shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over the Austin Bruins.
Nelson who did not dress Friday night and was playing in his first game in four outings, stopped 26 shots in blanking the third-highest scoring team in the NAHL this season.
The win gave the Bobcats (31-22-5) a 5-3-0 advantage in the season series with the Bruins, with the final two games of the season moving to the VFW Sports Center in Bismarck this coming weekend.
The loss by the Bruins (38-19-1), coupled with a win by the Aberdeen Wings over the Minnesota Magicians, reduced the Bruin lead for the division title to one point. Aberdeen plays at Wenatchee this weekend.
Nate Repensky (Duluth, MN) took over the team lead in scoring with the lone goal in the game, scored at 15:49 of the third period. The Yale commit now has 49 points, 12th overall in the NAHL, and far and away the highest scoring defenseman in the league.
Power-play success was again tough to find Saturday night, as the Bobcats were blanked on seven power plays, after they came up empty on 10 man-advantages Friday night. Bismarck's power play conversion rate fell to 14.3%, 15th in the NAHL.
But Nelson needed only one score to earn the win, shutting out Austin for the second straight game, after recording a 7-0 blanking of the Bruins in Austin on February 1st. Nelson is one game's worth of work away from eclipsing the 3000 minute mark this season, the only NAHL goalie in position to achieve the mark.
The Bobcats host Austin in the final two regular season games Friday and Saturday in Bismarck. Tickets are available at 222-3300 or online at www.bismarckbobcats.com.
