Moncton Wildcats News Release
With the ECHL playoffs underway, two former Wildcats find themselves suiting up for the same goal.
Although Stephen Johnson and Jeremy McKenna didn't play together in Moncton, they find themselves teammates this season as they forge ahead in post-season play. Both former Wildcats are playing with the Wichita Thunder who are headed into game 5 of their Western Conference Semi-Final series tonight against the Fort Wayne Komets. The best-of-five series is currently tied at 2-2, with the winning team going on to play the Allen Americans in the conference finals.
In their quest for the Kelly Cup, this year's playoffs looked a little different with the top four teams in each conference qualifying for playoffs.
During this first round series, McKenna has two points in 4 playoff games, while Johnson has one point in two games played.
This year was former Wildcat captain, Stephen Johnson's first season in the ECHL after playing four years of USports with the Saint Mary's Huskies. Although a late start this year due to COVID-19 he played in 47 regular season games with the Thunder totalling 18 points.
Jeremy McKenna had a bit of a different path this season going back and forth between the ECHL and AHL due to COVID-19 delays. Jeremy would begin the season in Wichita putting up 11 points in 13 games before the AHL began, then he went up to join the Toronto Marlies in the AHL where he would play 28 games before retuning to finish the season in Wichita.
Another familiar face to Wildcats fans is also suiting up for game five of a tied series in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. Zach Malatesta and the South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL) have tied their series with the Florida Everblades 2-2; the deciding game five will happen tonight. This season Zach played in 51 regular season games with 26 points, and has appeared in all four playoff games, adding an assist.
Good luck to these three former Wildcats in their games tonight!
