IRVINE, Calif. (July 1st, 2015) - A back and forth battle ensued at Anteater Stadium Wednesday night, as Orange County Blues FC defeated Oklahoma City Energy FC 1-0.
Christofer Ramirez scored his seventh goal of the season, the only goal, in a match that featured a fair amount of physicality and chippiness.
The action started quickly for Orange County, as Ramirez pressured the OKC defense with two early shots. After some rough fouls and verbal exchanges, Josh Suggs found himself open on the overlap around the 30th minute, but couldn't finish. The scoreless draw was broken in the 33rd minute by Ramirez, who received a deflected cross from Christopher Santana, and rolled it past Energy goalkeeper Evan Newton. Chris Cortez almost doubled the lead in the 41st when his shot clanged off the right post.
The high pressure continued in the second half, as Santana fired a shot over the net in the 48th off a ball from Ramirez, who had escaped his defender on the endline. In the 62nd, Jefrey Payeras migrated to the offensive half, and pulled a magnificent backheel to Brenton Griffiths, but his cross just missed the head of Ramirez.
Orange County was reduced to 10 men in the 79th minute, after Jimmy Turner was sent off not three minutes after entering a substitute. The Blues' defense held strong, including several big saves from goalkeeper Pepe Miranda to hold on to the victory.
OC Blues FC improves to 7-6-1, with 22 points on the season. OKC falls to 7-5-3, with 24 points. Both teams hold their original place in the standings, with OKC in 5th and OC in 6th.
The Blues now head on the road for four straight matches, starting with Sunday, July 5th at Arizona United SC, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. PT.
