Blues to Host Guatemalan Giants Municipal on July 22

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Blues are proud to announce they will be hosting the most storied club in Guatemalan professional soccer, C.S.D. Municipal, at Fullerton's Titan Stadium on Sunday, July 22, for a high-profile international exhibition. The contest will be part of a doubleheader with the Blues' W-League sister club, the 12-0-1 Pali Blues, who have already clinched first place in their division and will kick off the exciting day of soccer as well as their postseason with the Western Conference Championship game.

Municipal is the most popular and most successful club in the history of Guatemalan soccer, having won the league crown a record 29 times and remaining the only club from the Central American nation to ever win the CONCACAF Champions Cup (replaced in 2008 by the CONCACAF Champions League). The "Rojos," as the team from the capital, Guatemala City, is also known, have spent a record 29 years in the Liga Nacional since the domestic topflight's inaugural season in 1942.

The roster of the 2011 Liga Nacional Apertura champions features numerous stars of the Guatemalan game, including current national team members Martin Ávila, Claudio Albizuris and attacker Mario "El Loco" Rodriguez, who played for the Columbus Crew during the 2005 Major League Soccer season. The trio shares the field with Municipal and Panamanian goalkeeping legend Jaime Penedo.

The Blues take on Municipal at 5 p.m. PT on July 22, with the kickoff time for the Pali Blues' W-League Western Conference Championship match yet to be determined. Tickets for the day's doubleheader are $20 for General Admission ($10 for kids 12 and under) and $30 for Midfield Premium seating.
