Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Waldorf, MD- August 9, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (18-11, 44-55) defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (11-18, 53-46) 5-4 in 11 Innings to open up a four-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The 'Fish have now won seven of the last nine head to head meetings against the First Half Freedom Division Champions.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Cody Scarpetta picked up a no-decision, pitching five and one-third innings, giving up two runs on four hits, walking three, striking out four, and throwing one wild pitch. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Wade Korpi also did not factor in the game's final outcome, tossing four and one-third innings, surrendering three runs on five hits, walking three, striking out two, and issuing one home run. Patrick Mincey (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing one run on two hits, walking two and striking out two in his one inning of work. Orlando Santos (3-4) suffered the loss, giving up one run on one hit, walking two and striking out one in an inning out of the bullpen. Sam Gervacio retired all three batters he faced, striking out one, registering his second save of the 2015 campaign.

Bridgeport put up a "picket fence" with single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings all off Korpi to take a 3-0 lead. Luis Rodriguez led off the third frame launching a solo home run on a three and one count, and the 'Fish were up 1-0. Wes Wallace laced a two out, run-scoring single to left field in the fourth, plating Wilson Batista to give the visitors a 2-0 cushion. All-Star Welington Dotel added an insurance run in the fifth with an RBI single, bringing home Matt Burns who started the rally with a leadoff base knock of his own, and the Bluefish had a 3-0 edge at the midway point of the baseball game. Southern Maryland answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning on a game-tying, three-run home run by Gustavo Molina with one out on the second pitch thrown by Erik Draxton, who came on in relief of Scarpetta, and just like that we started fresh with the game deadlocked at three.

The fans in Waldorf were treated to free baseball as the game remained all square moving to the tenth. Luis Rodriguez gave Bridgeport a 4-3 lead with a two out RBI single to center field off Blue Crabs reliever Cody Eppley, bringing home Batista. The Blue Crabs got back up off the canvas and came from behind for the second time on the day in the home half of the tenth as Casey Frawley belted a double to left center off Mincey, scoring pinch-runner Keith Castillo with the tying run, and the game was knotted at four. The Bluefish responded once again in the top of the 11th to take the lead for good at 5-4 on a run scoring single by Batista off Santos, plating Burns who started the rally with the ever so important leadoff walk. Gervacio did the rest for the 'Fish, capping his clean inning out of the bullpen by striking out Castillo swinging, and Bridgeport had a dramatic extra-innings victory to kick off the road trip. Luis Rodriguez led the offensive attack for the Bluefish with three hits and two runs driven home.

Bridgeport continues their brief four game road trip tomorrow evening against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. The Bluefish return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday, August 13th when they welcome in the York Revolution for a four game series. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a Keep Calm and 'Fish On T- Shirt. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
