Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (15-29) were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers (24-19) 4-2 Tuesday Night in the first of a three game midweek series at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard and a seven game homestand in the Park City. Lancaster improves to 57-19 over Bridgeport in the last four seasons overall.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Dan Johnson's efforts did not factor into the outcome of the game, as the knuckleballer spent five innings on the mound, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits, walking and striking out four. D.J. Mitchell (0-1) suffered the loss, after giving up the lead in the ninth inning. The right hander pitched four innings for the 'Fish, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and walking one. Lancaster Starting Pitcher Terry Doyle tossed the first seven innings but picked up a no-decision, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits, walking two and striking out five. Ryan Dennick (3-1) earned the victory in relief, allowing just a single hit in four batters faced, striking out one. Cory Burns picked up his 10th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning out of the bullpen, striking out a pair.
The Bluefish got things started offensively in the bottom of the first inning, as cleanup hitter Jose Cuevas singled to send Endy Chavez home, giving the 'Fish a 1-0 lead. Lancaster would tie the game at one game in the top of the third when Josh Bell drove in in Caleb Gindl with two outs and two strikes. The Barnstormers would take their first lead of the night in the top of the fourth, as a three-hit inning would lead to Mike McDade scoring on a sacrifice fly, giving the visitors a 2-1 cushion. Bridgeport's answer came in the home half of the fifth, as Anthony Giansanti was sent home following a leadoff triple, on a two-out runs scoring single by Luis Hernandez, extending his on-base streak to a team high 13 consecutive games.
The game would prove to be a pitcher's duel, as Johnson and Doyle would both be followed by strong relief efforts. Johnson and Mitchell combined to retire 14 consecutive Lancaster batters between the fourth and eighth innings, while Dennick and Burns stranded two Bluefish and struck out three in the final two innings of the contest. The Barnstormers would take the lead for good in the top half of the ninth inning as two Bridgeport errors in the frame would lead to a two RBI single by Gindl, brought home McDade and Charlie Cutler to make 4-2 Lancaster. Giansanti led Bridgeport offensively, collecting two hits and a run scored in three plate appearances.
