BlueClaws host Coaches Clinic, MLB umpire to speak

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Lakewood BlueClaws will host the fifth annual Coaches Clinic, presented by Velocity Sports Performance of Wall, Saturday, February 3 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at FirstEnergy Park. The clinic will feature Major League umpire Phil Cuzzi, former Major League pitcher Mark Leiter and Barry Davis, head baseball coach at Rider University.
Designed for all area baseball and softball coaches, from Little League to high school, the clinic will feature discussion and instruction on hitting, pitching, practice organization, coach and umpire relationships, fitness training, and injury prevention.
"Every year our presenters offer a unique aspect on how they view the game," Geoff Brown, BlueClaws General Manager said. "It's no different this year as our speakers come from all facets of the game, giving our area coaches a deep look at many elements involved in running successful teams."
Cuzzi, an eight year MLB veteran, will be the first umpire to present at the annual Coaches Clinic and will focus on the dynamics of the coach and umpire relationship. The Belleville, N.J. native has worked the 2003 and 2004 Division Series and the 2005 National League Championship Series. He has also worked for nine different minor leagues, including the South Atlantic League, of which the BlueClaws are a member.
Also presenting at the clinic will be Toms River native and 12 year Major League pitcher, Mark Leiter. Leiter will stress the importance of pitching mechanics and proper development of today's younger pitchers. Barry Davis, head baseball coach at Rider University rounds out the panel of presenters. Davis will discuss practice organization and hitting.
In addition, Velocity Sports Performance of Wall will talk about fitness training with specific focus on speed, power, and agility, as well as injury prevention and athletic confidence.
Space is limited and the $40 registration fee includes a continental breakfast, lunch, official BlueClaws Coaches Clinic T-shirt and a BlueClaws goodie bag. All participants must be pre-registered.
