Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ â Jake Blalock doubled home the decisive runs in the fifth inning and the bullpen provided stellar relief for a fourth straight night in Lakewood's 4-2 win over Savannah at FirstEnergy Park Thursday night. The BlueClaws pulled off a series sweep to extend their season-high winning streak to four and improved to 15-19 overall and 9-5 at home, while the Sand Gnats dropped to 17-17.
The BlueClaws tallied first by pushing across a two-out run in the second inning against Jason Bergmann, a 1999 graduate of nearby Manalapan High School. Carlos Rodriguez tripled into the right field corner with two outs and scored on a squeez bunt by Tim Gradoville, who picked up just his second hit in 23 at-bats. Rodriguez pushed his hitting streak to eight games by finishing with two hits in three at-bats and is now 11-for-30 during the streak to push his average over the .200 mark for the first time since April 9.
Savannah tied the game in the fourth on a two-out single by Trey Webb that plated Josh Emmerick. The game remained tied in the bottom half of the inning when Gradoville lined into a triple play with the bases loaded. The catcher hit a line drive that was caught by shortstop Trey Webb moving toward second base. He stepped on the bag to double off Omar Bramasco and threw to first to Josh Whitesell to catch Rodriguez straying too far from the bag at first to complete the rare feat. It was the second triple play turned at FirstEnergy Park and the first against the BlueClaws, who executed one during the 2003 season.
Javon Moran reached on a Jason Conlisk error to open the home fifth and advanced to second base when Michael Bourn walked and both speedsters were able to score easily when Blalock ripped a line-drive double into the alley in right-center field. Bourn walked with one out in the seventh, stole second after Blalock struck out and scored on the next pitch when Ruiz lined a single into center field to make it 4-2.
Lakewood starter Nate Cabrera lasted four innings and gave up one run on four hits and five walks in his third start since joining the club. Kyle Parcus took over in the fifth and yielded one run, in the seventh, in three innings of work. The left-hander allowed three hits and struck out one and picked up the win to improve to 2-1. Dan Hodges worked a pair of scoreless innings to record his fifth save in seven tries. The BlueClaws bullpen combined for 15 innings of work in the series and allowed only one run on five hits with 15 strikeouts.
The BlueClaws open a four-game series Friday against the Southern Division-leading Charleston (SC) RiverDogs. Lakewood right-hander Scott Mathieson gets the starting assignment against left-hander James Houser. All BlueClaws games, home and away, can be heard on 1160 WOBM AM and www.sportsjuice.com. Coverage of Friday's game will begin at 6:20 p.m.
