LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Lakewood BlueClaws announced Monday that the Phillie Phanatic and ZOOperstars will return to FirstEnergy Park in 2009, and for the first time, pro wrestling legend Hacksaw Jim Duggan will be in Lakewood to throw out a first pitch and sign autographs for fans.
"Entertainers like these really exemplify what Minor League Baseball is all about," said BlueClaws General Manager Geoff Brown. "We provide great fun and entertainment at low prices. We're excited to assemble such a great group again in 2009."
The Phillie Phanatic, the long time mascot of the Phillies, whose appearances are once again presented by OceanFirst Bank, will make his annual visits on June 29th and August 24th. Both nights are Kids Eat Free Mondays presented by ShopRite, where children under 12 will receive a voucher for a free hot dog, bag of chips, and soda.
The ZOOperstars come to Lakewood on June 8th, a Kids Eat Free Monday, and August 6th. Known for their hilarious between-inning skits, the ZOOperstars are animal creations modeled after famous sports figures, such as Alex Frogriguez, Ken Giraffey, Jr. and Shaquille O'Seal.
Finally, Hacksaw Jim Duggan will throw out a first pitch and sign autographs at the BlueClaws game on Saturday, June 20th. Duggan, the winner of the first Royal Rumble, follows several other wrestlers who have appeared in Lakewood, including King Kong Bundy, Mick Foley, Jerry "The King" Lawler, Sergeant Slaughter, and George "The Animal" Steele.
The Lakewood BlueClaws, the single-A affiliate of the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies, welcomed 425,166 fans to FirstEnergy Park during the 2008 season which upped their eight-season total to 3,595,378. They have led the South Atlantic League in average or overall attendance in each of their eight seasons.
