Chillicothe Paints News Release
The Blue Star Mothers of America will be honored during special ceremonies prior to the Chillicothe Paints versus the Windy City Thunderbolts baseball game, Sunday night at V. A. Memorial Stadium.
The Blue Star Mothers will be holding their National Convention in Chillicothe from Sunday, July 30th to Wednesday, August 3rd. The non-partisan, non-political organization was officially formed in 1942, however the blue star flag was created in 1917 and people hung it in their windows to denote that a member of the family was serving in the armed forces.
Also during World War I, the blue star became gold if a serve member was killed or died while on active duty. Mothers volunteered throughout the tough times of World War II, including work in hospitals. The Blue Star Mothers were the driving force behind the construction of V. A. Memorial Stadium, which was dedicated in 1954 for the use of games being played by the patients at the Chillicothe institution.
Fans attending Sunday's game should note that the Blue Star Mothers will be collecting items such as school supplies and slightly used or new clothing to benefit an orphanage in South Africa as requested by the United States Military troops that are stationed there.
The evening promises to produce a feeling of American pride, fond memories and patriotism for fans of all ages.
Game time Sunday is 6:05 p.m. with ceremonies starting at 5:30 p.m. The gates will open at 4:35 p.m.
