PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (July 18, 2015) - The Dunedin Blue Jays scored four runs in the first two innings and went on to beat the St. Lucie Mets 4-2 on Saturday at Tradition Field.
All six runs in the game were scored in the first three innings. The teams combined for three singles and one walk over the final six innings.
The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the first on Matt Dean's one-out RBI single. They scored their final three runs in a sloppy second by the Mets.
Miller Diaz issued two walks and a single to load the bases. He followed by plunking Anthony Alford to force in a run that made it 2-0. With the bases reloaded, Richard Urena hit a grounder to second that was booted by Phil Evans to bring in a run and load the bases again. Rowdy Tellez capped the inning with a sac fly to put the Blue Jays up 4-0.
Evans got a run back in the bottom of the second on an RBI double. Stefan Sabol ripped a two-out RBI single in the third off of Jairo Labourt to make it 4-2.
The Mets would only manage two singles by Ledneir Ricardo and Dominic Smith the remainder of the game.
Blue Jays reliever Alonzo Gonzalez pitched 4.1 scoreless innings to get the win. Brad Allen pitched a clean eighth and Arik Sikula struck out two in the ninth for his fourth save.
Diaz took the loss for the Mets. He settled down and pitched into the sixth. He allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits. He walked three and struck out one.
Robby Coles pitched two perfect innings of relief with two strikeouts.
Kyle Regnault tossed a perfect eighth and ninth with three strikeouts.
Evans extended his hitting streak to six games with his double.
Both teams only managed five hits apiece.
The Blue Jays ended up winning the final three games of the series after the Mets won the opener 2-0 on Wednesday. In the last two weeks the Mets have had a four-game losing streak, seven-game winning streak and a three-game losing streak.
The Mets (47-46, 12-11) will hit the road to Port Charlotte to start a three-game series at the Stone Crabs starting Sunday at 4 p.m. The game can be heard on www.stluciemets.com.
