Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

Jupiter, FL - The Dunedin Blue Jays got production from the whole lineup to beat the Palm Beach Cardinals 4-1 on a rainy Thursday morning at Roger Dean Stadium. The game was called after two rain delays totaling one hour and five minutes. The two teams split the four-game series.

The Blue Jays (28-11) got a run or an RBI from eight different players to go up 4-1 after six innings. Dwight Smith led off the game with a ground rule double and scored the first run on a K. C. Hobson sacrifice fly to put Dunedin up 1-0.

The Cardinals (18-22) tied the game 1-1 in the second on an Alex Mejia RBI single. Casey Rasmus walked and David Washington followed with a single to put Rasmus in position for Mejia.

After the Jays' first hit of the game, Cardinals starter Joe Cuda looked sharp on the mound. Following Smith's double, Cuda retired the next 14 batters in a row with five strikeouts during the stretch.

Cuda was a few bounces away from a terrific outing altogether. After retiring the first two batters of the fifth inning, Nick Baligod singled and moved to third on two wild pitches. Gustavo Pierre snuck a single through the right side of the infield to make it a 2-1 ballgame in favor of the Jays.

Dunedin did more damage with two outs in the sixth inning. With two away and runners on first and second, Emilio Guerrero hit a soft blooper that fell just over the infield to bring in another run for the Blue Jays. Derrick Chung also chipped in an RBI single to make it 4-1 and chase Cuda from the game.

Overall, Cuda (0-5) went 5.2 innings, scattered six hits, allowed four runs, walked one and fanned six.

Sam Tuivailala and Mitch Harris combined for 1.2 perfect innings of relief before the game was called in the eighth inning.

Jesse Hernandez (3-1) allowed the lone Palm Beach run on six hits over five innings of work to pick up the win for the Blue Jays. Efrain Nieves tossed the final two innings of the game with zeros across to earn the save.

The Cardinals will start a four-game series with the Yankees in Tampa on Friday night. LH Kyle Helisek (1-2, 2.76) will start for Palm Beach against RH Nick Goody (0-0, 4.91) for Tampa. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
