Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Clearwater Threshers took a one-run lead into the ninth, but surrendered two runs to Jupiter in the inning as the Hammerheads took the finale, 6-5 on Thursday.
With the loss, the Threshers (8-29) were swept by the Hammerheads (19-21) in the four game series.
Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez made the first professional start of his career and lasted five innings. Gonzalez allowed three runs - two earned - on six hits while walking two and striking out one. He was on a 75 pitch limit and threw 69, of which 40 went for strikes.
Clearwater fell behind 3-0 in the fourth inning, but answered with three runs in the bottom half. Nick Ferdinand doubled into the left-center gap to plate two runs and then Malquin Canelo singled him home to tie it up.
Luis Paulino replaced Gonzalez in the sixth and pitched 3.1 innings. He received a no-decision after giving up two runs - one earned - on four hits.
In the seventh inning, Jupiter took a 4-3 lead after Canelo misplayed a groundball with two outs that allowed the go-ahead run to score.
It was 4-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth when Clearwater chased Jupiter starter Jacob Esch after a Pete Lavin double and an Art Charles single. Casey McCarthy came on in relief and struck out Andrew Knapp for the first out.
Harold Martinez then stepped up and drilled a line drive into right to give the Threshers a 5-4 lead. Both runs were charged to Esch.
Paulino began the top of the ninth by walking the leadoff batter Terrence Dayleg. Matt Juengel sacrificed him to second, which prompted manager Nelson Prada to bring in lefty Lino Martinez to face the lefty-hitting Viosergy Rosa.
Rosa walked to put men on first and second with one out. Austin Barnes then tied the game with a single to left on a two-strike pitch, and the runners advanced to second and third on the throw home.
Former first-round pick Colin Moran delivered a sacrifice-fly to score the game-winning run and propel the Hammerheads ahead of the Threshers.
Clearwater got a leadoff baserunner off of Joseph O'Gara, but were held scoreless in the ninth.
The Threshers hit the road for a ten-game road trip starting in Charlotte on Friday. Coverage begins at 6:15 on threshersbaseball.com, with first pitch between the Threshers and Stone Crabs at 6:30 p.m.
